This Motor Vehicle Operator position is located in VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS), within the Facilities Management Service at Aurora, CO. Under the supervision of the Facilities Management Service Traffic Manager, the incumbent works as a Motor Vehicle Operator in transport of items and Veteran patients for ECHCS and its Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC). Items may refer to: medical equipment, supplies, administrative documents, pharmaceuticals, wheelchairs, and others.
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to:
Possesses and maintains a valid, unrestricted Driver's License.
Works with minimal direct supervision. Makes decisions based on knowledge of duties and fleet operations.
Follows instructions on maintaining and transportation manifest of all passengers and ensures routes have timely arrival and departures.
Diagnoses vehicle operational issues and contacts certified vendors in accordance with manufacture guidance. Ability to read and understand the vehicles owner manual.
Employs defensive driving techniques, including recognizing developing hazardous road and traffic conditions and selecting an alternate route to avoid potential delays and problems.
Conducts administrative duties using Microsoft Office programs and Fleet Information Management Systems to perform administrative work encompassing the collection, processing, and dissemination of fleet data.
Monitors and tracks vehicle utilization criteria, alternative fuel usage, mileage data and other administrative data involved in fleet performance.
Ensures safety requirements are adhered to prevent injuries by such things as proper stowing of equipment, using truck or wheelchair lift, proper lifting techniques, securing of wheelchairs and proper cargo storage.
Monitors the safety of patients being transported in all types of weather conditions while maintaining an accurate route schedule and keeping in mind the comfort of patients.
Schedules periodic maintenance for fleet vehicles and ensures the maintenance has been completed by the driver or by him/herself.
Completes operator pre-trip and post-trip inspections, accident/incident reports and maintenance records.
Operates one or more types of motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of up to 26,000 pounds over various terrains, through all types of weather conditions, various traffic conditions, both long and short hauls.
Transports patients and various items between VA facilities or other assigned facilities. Items may include such things as medical equipment, supplies, administrative documents, pharmaceuticals, food carts, wheelchairs, oxygen bottles and other equipment and supplies.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Moderate to heavy exertion is required in operating, turning, backing and controlling various types of motor vehicles that carry heavy loads or large numbers of people. Work requires sitting for long periods of time and requires manual dexterity in loading, unloading and routine lifting of medium and heavy objects ranging up to 100 pounds or more. The lifting of heavy items over 40 pounds will be accomplished with the assistance of other workers, weight-handling equipment or with a forklift.
Duties to be performed will include lifting, bending, squatting, standing, pushing, pulling, and handling heavy containers and miscellaneous materials and equipment. Moderate physical effort may be required to lift and properly secure tire traction chains. Incumbent must demonstrate diplomacy and effectiveness of interpersonal communication is necessary. Occasionally, stressful working conditions may be encountered requiring the incumbent to handle the situation safely and effectively.
