This Motor Vehicle Operator Leader position is located in the Health Administrative Service of the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System at Aurora, CO. This position serves as a WG Leader and works under the supervision of the Veterans Transportation Program Mobility Manager. The MVO Leader will be responsible for maintaining fleet records, collecting receipts, ensuring drivers are trained and are entering information into VA systems, and ensuring communication and compliance with GSA.
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to:
Possessing and maintaining a valid, unrestricted CDL license with passenger endorsement.
Operating multi-passenger wheelchair equipped vans.
Being familiar with the National Department of Transportation and Colorado guidelines/polices governing motor vehicle operators and well versed in every aspect of patient safety during transport.
Driving vehicles in various road conditions to safely transport patients to their destinations and know how to properly load and secure wheelchair patients in the vehicle.
Providing guidance and training to 10 motor vehicle operators to ensure activities are being performed in accordance with established procedures.
Monitoring vehicle usage; to include recording number of trips and passenger totals and types.
Ensuring vehicle fleet is sized and maintained to VA and GSA requirements.
Being knowledge of vehicles equipped with special-purpose accessory equipment.
Coordinating trips with the Transportation Coordinator to determining type of vehicle to be used, deadlines to be met, and to gather any special information important to the mission.
Understanding the use of VetRide and obeying all traffic laws and safety regulations, as well as the safe loading and unloading of the vehicle.
Reporting of accidents, breakdowns, or equipment failure/needs etc. to the attention of the Mobility Manager immediately.
Providing care to the age of patients being served.
Assisting patients into and out of the vehicle.
Operates vehicle in all types of traffic and weather situation on public roads.
Driving in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated roads and interchange systems.
Performing preventive maintenance tasks and manifest rosters.
Maintaining current informational knowledge base and answering the questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc. and obtaining needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems that arise.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent must drive in very congested traffic, construction zones and country roads. The incumbent must handle patients, both Ambulatory and wheelchair, in loading and unloading from vans and buses. Incumbent must handle patients loading to wheelchair from hospital bed, and to wheelchair dropping off at private homes, encounters narrow hallways, and difficult loading areas thereby increasing physical effort. Incumbent must be able to stoop, bend, climb, and lift in excess of seventy-five lbs. He/she must be able to drive for four-hour periods and stay mentally alert. If driver realizes he/she is not mentally alert, must use good judgement in pulling over at the first safe area, road checking bus with walk-around inspection and then continue driving as soon as possible. The incumbent must be able to change tires in emergent situations. Tire/rim combination is in excess of seventy-five lbs.
The daily duties performed consist of climbing in and out of vehicles, moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on or in to load or tie down cargo. Works in all weather conditions, pushing and pulling wheelchairs; sometimes lifting heavy freight equipment, supplies, etc., climbing steps, loading, and unloading patients in wheelchairs in vans, and driving long hours on trips. Must be physically sound and have good coordination of eyes, hands, feet, and vision and depth perception. Must be mentally alert to traffic hazards and dangers of the highway.
