This Industrial Equipment Mechanic Leader position is within the Facility Management service of the VA Eastern Colorado Healthcare System at Aurora, CO and serves as a working leader. This position reports to the Supervisor of Maintenance and Repair (M&R). The primary purpose of the position is to perform preventative maintenance, repairs, installations, tests, and safety inspections on mechanical equipment, some of which may have electronic and/or battery components.
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to:
Possessing and maintaining a valid, unrestricted Driver's License.
Ensures that needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
Checks instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and advises other employees how to follow supervisor's instructions and to meet deadlines.
Demonstrates proper work methods.
Answers workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (e.g., standard operating procedures).
Obtains needed information or decision from the supervisor on problems that come up during the work.
Ensures subordinates complete recurring preventive maintenance schedules and follow safety rules and practices.
Plans and completes repairs, installation, and maintenance of industrial equipment.
Works along with other multidisciplinary teams to include but not limited to: industrial equipment mechanics, electricians, plumbers, pipefitters, heating ventilation air conditioning mechanics, refrigeration mechanics, maintenance mechanics, painters, carpenters, boiler operators, and control mechanics. Supports other functions encompassing the FMS mission for maintenance and operations of the facility.
Fabricates replacement parts for equipment and special projects.
Cuts and welds metals to make or repair items such as braces and hangers.
Examines equipment and appliances to determine the economic feasibility of repair versus replacement and makes recommendations to supervisor.
Demonstrates appropriate technical expertise required for successful, independent maintenance, and repair of assigned equipment.
Reads and interprets blueprints, technical manuals, diagrams, and instructions.
Maintains inventory of tools and supplies; responsible for keeping the workplace, tools, equipment, and materials clean, orderly, and secure and for maintaining proper records of time and material expended.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent performs tasks normally requiring moderate physical exertion, including frequent medium lifting of up to 40 pounds, pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, and negotiation confined spaces, subbasements, and interstitial spaces. Incumbent frequently works off high ladders, scaffolds, and platforms. Heavy lifting over 40 pounds and strenuous exertion is occasionally performed. The incumbent must regularly lift and align parts requiring considerable strength and agility from awkward positions. The incumbent is standing or walking most of the time and must be in good overall physical condition.
