This position is located in Wrangell-St Elias National Park and Preserve, in the Resource Stewardship and Science Team. This is a temporary promotion/detail opportunity not to exceed 1 year and can be extended up to 5 years. This temporary promotion/detail opportunity may be made permanent without further competition. TDY expenses will be provided for the duration of the temporary promotion/detail in accordance with agency policy.

Duties

As a cultural anthropologist, this position provides professional staff assistance to management in the development, review, analysis, evaluation, and monitoring of programs in applied cultural anthropology/ethnography in the park or a related group of parks. Major duties include: Working with higher-graded cultural anthropologists to advise park management on park natural (flora and fauna) and cultural ethnographic resources (sites, structures, objects and landscapes) and the contemporary people who value them. Performing duties related to management of the park's subsistence program. Performing duties related to management of the park's ethnography program. Performing duties related to tribal relations. Assisting in the performance of duties related to natural resources including fish and wildlife monitoring and research. Assisting in the performance of duties related to cultural resources including archeological resources, historic structures, and museum collections. Providing input on research needs and supporting efforts toward obtaining needed research through various programs, grants, and contracts.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/13/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. This temporary assignment will be filled as either a temporary promotion, or as a detail opportunity to the same, higher, or lower grade. What is a temporary promotion? A temporary promotion is a temporary assignment of an employee to a higher grade and occupational series for which an employee is qualified. Upon completion of the temporary promotion, the employee returns to his/her official position and grade. Temporary promotion may be made permanent without further competition. What is a detail? A detail is a temporary assignment of an employee to a different position for a specified period, with the employee returning to his/her regular duties at the end of the assignment. While on detail the employee continues to hold his/her official position from which detailed and keeps the same status and grade. To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must meet one of the following basic requirements by close of the announcement for the Anthropology Series 0190: Basic Requirement: Degree in an appropriate field of anthropology. You must include transcripts. -OR- Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major, or a combination of courses totaling at least 24 semester hours in an appropriate field of anthropology, or related course work, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must include transcripts and hours worked per week. -OR- Four years of appropriate experience in anthropology performing research, museum work, or similar professional-level work. You must include hours worked per week. -AND- In addition to meeting at least one of the basic requirements listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: researching technical reports and other documents and using ethnographic research methods such as interviews and participant observation to collect information about the beliefs, practices, traditions, and social organization of human groups; and ?preparing graphs, tables and text for reports or presentations of cultural information. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree, with major study in anthropology, history, biology, physical science, geology, human geography, or other closely related fields that primarily concern human adaptation to the environment or evolutionary development, and which supports the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies needed to perform the work of this position. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, have a combination of experience and education. To calculate your percentage of qualifying graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 18 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Add the two percentages. They must equal 100% to qualify using this option. You must include transcripts and hours worked per week. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
