This position is assigned to the Engineering Service. The employee serves primarily as a carpenter helper, throughout the facility as assigned and support of the interior design program. Sioux Falls VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS) which consists of the Medical Center at the main campus and five Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). The CBOCs are located throughout the eastern side of South Dakota and Iowa.

Duties

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran. This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. Major duties listed but not limited to: Work consists of acoustical tile ceiling repair and installation and vinyl and ceramic tile installation and repair Performs proper and safe demolition techniques Skill in the use and operation of a variety of hand and power tools that are used to accomplish tasks of the carpentry trade Perform work orders, sketches, basic blueprints, and instructions from the supervisor or higher-level carpenter which are complete in terms of type of job required and materials and methods to be used Perform work assignments through oral instructions or through work orders, sketches or basic blueprints Determine the tools and methods to be used for established procedures or receives specific instructions from the supervisor or higher-level employee for work that is not routine Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (work hours may be further discussed during the interview) Position Description Title/PD#: Carpentry Worker/PD80427A Physical Requirements: You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Without more than normal supervision? Must have the ability to do the work of a Carpentry Worker without more than normal supervision in performing the full range of duties. Related experience includes: skill in using measuring tapes, squares, levels and other carpentry tools to plan, lay out, measure, cut, construct and install materials according to dimensional requirements and specifications; measure, cut, construct, install, or repair wood furniture, metal furniture, cabinets, dry walls, plaster walls, and partitions; replace and/or repair acoustical tile ceilings, floor tile and ceramic tile; spread adhesives and perform demolition; work on doors, frames, windows and window blinds; repair and/or assist with repairs of roofs; mount certain types of medical equipment to ceilings and walls as well as anchoring equipment to floors in a safe and sturdy manner; and apply mathematics to plan, measure, and lay out materials according to dimensional requirements and specifications. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Working Conditions: Work is performed in areas where the worker is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. Incumbent may be exposed to weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders. Subject to cuts, bruises and contusions. Incumbent may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attic, which may be dusty, wet and dirty. Incumbent will use protective devices such as earplugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves.
