This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is responsible for providing visitors with information, education and interpretive services for a national monument, historical site, etc. that is administered by the Forest Service.

Duties

Informs the public of Forest Service recreation rules and regulations, traffic control, accident prevention, campground and picnic area operations, visitor information services, and miscellaneous recreation program activities. Develops and conducts scheduled interpretive talks, conservation education programs for youth and special tour programs of Forest Service land and water areas. Defines the significance of the site and its background. Answers recurring questions that require knowledge of a limited variety of facts, events, circumstances, personalities, and natural characteristics identified with the site. Checks the usage and condition of public use areas, boat ramps, group camps, and other recreation areas for safety, fire, sanitation and maintenance reasons. Assists with the visitor center’s program operations by either working at the information desk or at the entrance station by dealing with such issues pertaining to picnic facilities, campgrounds, visitor control, and fee collection. Answers routine visitors’ inquiries that range from where the locations of historical monuments are to when tours are scheduled. Complicated situations are usually referred to a higher-graded employee for resolution. Assists higher-graded Park Rangers with planning improvements of visitor center facilities or conducting interpretive programs. Maintains supply of informational materials and other stock items for distribution. Distributes publications requested in telephone and mail inquiries. Collects fees and book sale monies. Performs routine daily opening and closing procedures and assists with general office tasks. Operates and performs minor maintenance on audiovisual equipment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Your application and resume must clearly show that you possess the experience requirements. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Provide course descriptions as necessary. GS-04: Applicants must have 6 months general experience AND 6 months specialized experience; OR 2 years of education above high school with 12 semester hours of related coursework; OR a combination of education above high school and appropriate general and specialized experience. Qualifying coursework includes natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Examples of General Experience includes: Administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public. Examples of specialized experience include: Answering visitor inquiries; providing information on natural, historical, or cultural program or facility rules, regulations, and activities; checking the usage and condition of public use areas, boat ramps, group camps, and other recreation areas for safety, fire, sanitation and maintenance reasons; and maintaining the supply of educational materials and items for distribution. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
