This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to provide visitors with information, education and interpretive services for a national monument, historical site, etc. that is administered by the Forest Service.

Duties

The employee performs a variety of tasks that utilize established visitor management practices, processes, methods, and procedures. Develops and presents a variety of interpretive programs including orientation talks, conducted walks, and demonstrations to a variety of general public audiences or school groups. Initiates or assists with development or revision of interpretive materials, such as brochures, guidebooks, handouts, and exhibits. Operates a variety of audiovisual and other equipment used in connection with interpretive programs. Prepares and conducts on-and-off site environmental education programs for a variety of audiences. Initiates or assists with the creation or revision of environmental education materials. Assists in conducting teacher training and orientation programs. Inventories and maintains stock of environmental education materials, equipment, and supplies. Provides orientation, interpretive, and regulatory information relating to site specific regulations, hunting and fishing programs, and other visitor activities. Assists with maintaining working relationships with partnership organizations by attending a variety of events and functions, giving informative talks, and asking for assistance that benefits all parties involved. Communicates effectively with visitors and staff by writing or through interpretive activities that aid in implementing the visitor center’s outreach program. Drafts a variety of written materials that include news releases, articles, correspondence, and event flyers designed to increase understanding of the Forest Service Mission. Drafts a variety of written materials designed to encourage attendance at or assistance with a special event, explain the practices, and goals and objectives of the visitor center, and/or related issues. Assists with issuing special permits for wildlife/natural resource dependent recreational activities or other appropriate and compatible special events or activities.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Your application and resume must clearly show that you possess the experience requirements. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Provide course descriptions as necessary. GS-05: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work; OR appropriate combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience. Qualifying coursework includes natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Examples of specialized experience include: Answering visitor inquiries, providing information on rules, regulations, and program activities, conducting interpretive talks, conservation education programs, and facility tours. Checking the usage and condition of public use areas, boat ramps, group camps, and other recreation areas for safety, fire, sanitation and maintenance reasons and maintaining the supply of educational materials and items for distribution. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
