As a Nursing Assistant, you will be responsible for performing various resident care activities and related non-professional services necessary in caring for the non-skilled nursing care, personal needs and comfort of Residents.
This is an open continuous announcement. The open period is 6 months. Applications will be reviewed on the established cut dates: 11/24/23, 12/26/23, 01/25/24, 02/24/24, 03/27/24 and at the closing date. Applicants will not need to reapply to be considered.
Duties
As a Nursing Assistant, you will:
Have knowledge of nursing care principles, practices and procedures and skill sufficient to provide nursing care as directed by the professional nurse. Have knowledge and skills sufficient to recognize and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies in a variety of diagnostic and treatment procedures for the purpose of understanding and carrying out assigned instructions.
Take vital signs accurately and other measurements as required. Document Resident care in an electronic medical record. Have basic communication and interpersonal relationship skills sufficient to interact with medical professionals, Residents and families on a tactful and therapeutic level.
Answer call lights promptly to determine Residents needs. Provide comfort care and hygiene to Residents to include bathing, hair and nail care, oral hygiene, skin care and back rubs. Position Residents for comfort and therapy, serve and collect food trays and assist with feeding and maintain a safe, clean, pleasant Resident environment.
Maintain flow sheets and Resident records, documenting Resident care as per expected standards. Maximize Resident self care in ADL's with appropriate assistive devices. Take accurate vital signs (i.e. blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature) and other required measurements (i.e. height, weight). Under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor /Charge Nurse applies and removes binders and bandages (arm slings, ace bandages, etc.)
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience for the GS-5: you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience for this position includes:
Nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aide performing duties such as providing personal nursing care; OR
Performing support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus; OR
Caring for patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement; OR
Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.
OR you may substitute education for specialized experience as follows:
* A 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelors degree with courses related to the occupation, if required;
OR you may qualify on a combination of education and experience:
For example, the applicant has 9 months of specialized experience and 75 semester hours of college (15 semester hours beyond the second year and the equivalent of 3 months of specialized experience). The applicant meets 75 percent of the required experience and 25 percent of the required education. The applicant meets 100 percent of the requirement for 1 year of specialized experience and is qualified for the position. For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
AND
Certification: You must have an active and current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in a state or territory of the U.S.
AND
Physical Requirements: The work involves long periods of moving about the work unit. Work requires regular and recurring standing, bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, lifting and repositioning Residents. Must use proper body mechanics when lifting objects and use lift equipment for Residents. The work may require considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as lifting objects greater the 50 pounds or defending oneself against physical attack.
SPECIAL NOTE: Long-term care experience and/or interacting with geriatric patients is highly desired.
