Duties

Provide professional wildlife expertise in the protection, management, and improvement of wildlife within the framework of multiple-use management of forest and rangelands. Correlate wildlife management with other resource uses (e.g. timber, recreation, and minerals management) and implement wildlife habitat management programs with emphasis on maintaining and enhancing bio-diversity. Inspect habitat improvement projects for compliance with approved plans and recommend improvements. Prepare project work plans and coordinate project work with other unit personnel considering wildlife habitat requirements in relation to other multiple-use management of forest and range activities. Develop or provide input into the annual program of work determining budgeting and staffing needs. Provide assistance in preparing and reviewing environmental assessments and environmental impact statements affecting wildlife resources. Develop and implement wildlife interpretative programs and other means to promote the unit fish and wildlife programs. Provide functional assistance to other unit personnel to determine current progress in meeting planned programs and objectives, effectiveness of training, and opportunities for cooperative work. Advice, counsel or instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters. Plan work to be accomplished, set and adjust short-term priority and prepare schedule for completion of work.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. In addition to meeting the basic requirements outlined in the education section, you must also meet the specialized experience for this position. Specialized Experience FOR GS-09: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Serving as an advanced trainee specializing in wildlife biology and performing common qualitative and quantitative analyses of wildlife resources; conducting surveys and drafting tentative professional opinions to assist in determining wildlife resource needs and remedies; and assisting in carrying out a range of analytical/scientific assignments in the wildlife biology profession that included researching and analyzing data, issues, and information that support wildlife project recommendations. -OR- Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree. if related.. - OR- Two full years progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B, or J.D., if related. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. FOR GS-11: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: providing input in the wildlife management program by gathering, compiling, and analyzing data to determine environmental conditions, characteristics, and values, and the interrelationship of wildlife resources with other resources; analyzing data and recommending solutions to problems involving a limited section of wildlife resources issues, e.g., interpreting the effect and impact of changes on wildlife habitat as a result of specific resource activities; and providing input in the preparation, maintenance, and revision of wildlife plans that involved interpretation of data obtained from studies and field surveys; or other similar work.. -OR- Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M., if related. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Time-in-Grade: Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service). Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Demands: The individual works in an office setting at this level, however, in order to gather samples and complete monitoring activities, the individual frequently may be required to walk or ride vehicles over rough terrain, perform duties that require recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such as equipment and samples. Work Environment: Much of the work is performed in an office setting. However, frequent field work is necessary to complete the work involving outdoor exposure. Outdoor exposure involves some discomfort in extremes of temperature or inclement weather. The incumbent may be subjected to hostile wildlife, chemical and physical hazards.

Education

Basic Requirements Wildlife Biologist Series
1. Degree: biological science that included:
  • At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and
  • At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
  • At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
OR

2. Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Upon selection, official transcripts must be received prior to appointment.
