This position would be located in the pharmacy department of an Indian Health Service hospital or ambulatory care center but in either case a substantial portion of the work would be in ambulatory care. This position involves technical support work in a pharmacy under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. The work requires a specialized knowledge, experience and skills of the technical work of a pharmacy and a through knowledge of the routine and procedures of the pharmacy department.
Duties
NOTE: This position is being announced concurrently with announcement IHS-24-CH-12111577-ESEP/MP for candidates at the GS-05 & GS-06 grade level. Applicants must apply separately for each announcement in order to be considered for the higher grade level.
Performs basic technical processes entailed in dispensing prescriptions which include a basic review of the chart to determine appropriate patient and number of medications.
Verifies identity of patient, review all medications with patient using the IHS consultation method to include proper dose, directions for use, potential adverse reactions, side effects, expected outcomes.
Receives and fills ward and clinic supply orders using math skills to compute proper amounts, ascertain replenishment needs, and maintain pharmacy inventory,
Perform the technical functions required for bulk compounding.
Prepares sterile solutions in the pharmacy , Interprets the doctors orders, obtains necessary ingredients, measures and mixes ingredients to prepare intravenous additives.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
GS-03: Candidates must have at least 6-moths of general experience that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position OR have experience as a trainee performing: medication dispensing, maintaining pharmacy inventory, bulk compounding, and preparing packages of drug supplies for shipment to patients.
GS-04: Candidates must have at least 6 months of general AND 6 months of specialized experience. Specialize experience includes ordering, receiving/stocking, and dispensing medication and other pharmaceutical products to inpatient and outpatient departments by verifying identity of patients, reviewing medication with patients and identifying and risk factors.
SUBSTITUTING EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:
GS-03: Completed 1 year of study that included a course in biology, chemistry, or physics.
GS-04: Successfully completed 2-years of study in Pharmacy or Pharmacy Technology that included at least 12 semester hours in courses in the care, storage, distribution and preparation of pharmaceuticals, and appropriate laboratory work.
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject areas of the position.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Qualifying specialized experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories. Experience must have provided a basic knowledge of:
Pharmaceutical nomenclature
Characteristics, strengths and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals;
Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the
Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
