This position would be located in the pharmacy services of an Indian Health Service Hospital or ambulatory care center in either case a substantial portion of the workload would involve ambulatory care. A number of the tasks require review and final signature of a pharmacist such as ambulatory prescription including the review of drug therapy, drug information requests, hyperalimentation preparation and more complex pharmaceutical functions.
Duties
NOTE: This position is being announced concurrently with announcement IHS-24-CH-12111576-ESEP/MP for candidates at the GS-03 & GS-04 grade level. Please review vacancy announcement number IHS-24-CH-12111576-ESEP/MP for eligibility requirements. Applicants must apply separately for each announcement in order to be considered for the higher grade level.
Performs basic technical processes entailed in dispensing prescriptions which include a basic review of the chart to determine appropriate patient and number of medications.
Verifies identity of patient, review all medications with patient using the IHS consultation method to include proper dose, directions for use, potential adverse reactions, side effects, expected outcomes.
Participates in designed ongoing quality improvement activities in the pharmacy department as required by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.
Performs independent monthly inspections of all drug storage areas within the facility whether in pharmacy areas, inpatient areas or ambulatory areas including review of the cardiac arrest carts.
Prepares sterile solutions in the pharmacy, Interprets the doctors orders, obtains necessary ingredients, measures and mixes ingredients to prepare intravenous additives
Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
GS-05: 1 year of specialized experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples include: using established inventory/stocking electronic system filling and dispensing medication to inpatient/outpatient departments including reading complex medication instructions and abbreviations from the medical record, by first verifying patient information; Providing patient education; mixing routine orders of sterile medication.
GS-06: 1 year of specialized experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples Include: performing/carrying out projects regarding diabetes prevention; assess and prioritize individual, family and community health needs by planning and promoting health education activities and communicating to diabetic patients in a health care setting.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Qualifying specialized experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories. Experience must have provided a basic knowledge of:
Pharmaceutical nomenclature
Characteristics, strengths and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals;
Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the
Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:
GS-05: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in pharmacy, or that included at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses OR have successfully completed pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy practices while serving in the Armed Forces which is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of specialized experience.
GS-06: I have completed 6 months (9 semester hours) of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
