About the Position: Position is with the Directorate of Public Works located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, duties include carpentry and painting in the maintenance and repair of structures.

Duties

Perform painting duties including brushing, rolling and spraying, where paint and other coating materials have been prepared in accordance with specific instructions. Maintain, install, or repair a variety of items such as carpets, door fixtures, counter tops, and floor and wall tile. Perform carpentry duties to include repairing and installing decking, partitions, shelves, office doors, windows (including caulking and glazing) and similar items. Remove asbestos containing materials in accordance with Public Works standard operating procedures.

Requirements

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a Tier 1 background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

Works from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, and where the parts of the systems worked on are in hard to reach places. Is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works both inside and outside. When outside, incumbent is exposed to rain and wind. Inside work is usually in adequately heated, lighted and ventilated buildings. Work areas may be noisy, dirty, dusty, greasy, or smoky. Exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. May be required to wear protective clothing and equipment (i.e., respirator and eye/hearing protection devices) that may be confining, restricting, and uncomfortable. Exposure to hazardous materials is possible. Injuries may occur when lifting heavy pieces of lumber or equipment. Subject to cuts and bruises when using hand tools and equipment. More serious injuries may occur when operating power tools. Is subject to skin and lung irritations and possible poison from exposure to paint fumes, adhesives, solvents and other caustic materials.
