The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center (OKCVAMC) in the Prosthetics Department. The primary purpose of the position is to support the clinical operations and administrative functions of the OKC VAMC Prosthetics Fabrication Lab by fabricating orthotic and prosthetic devices, assisting with equipment maintenance and ensuring that all work is
performed following safety and compliance standards.
Duties
Major Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
Fabricates, adjusts and repairs orthotic and prosthetic devices under the supervision of the Clinical Lab Chief, Prosthetics & Sensory Aids Service
Knowledgeable of computer software programs to include, Prosthetic Inventory Packages
Prepares negative cast models for modification, formation of metal componentry and bench fabrication of AFOs and KAFOs following an orthometry form
Understands the steps, procedures, terminology, and policies associated with prosthetics and orthotics to apply the knowledge required; knowledgeable about the mechanical function of prosthetic and orthotic devices
Cognizant with terms used to describe the equipment and the sources from
which the item/repair can be obtained to assure that it will meet the objective of the
clinician and the patient.
Ability to read and understand work orders and orthotic and prosthetic procedures to fabricate requested devices and have knowledge of all types of disabilities
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm
Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician
Physical Requirements: The position demands a moderate degree of exertion and a high degree of dexterity, long periods of standing and long-distance walking from clinic to clinic. The work requires some physical exertion, prolong periods of standing and working at a variety of machines, bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, and stretching to work on devices and appliances. There may be recurring lifting (not to exceed 50lbs)
and moving of moderately heavy supplies and equipment such as wheelchairs and durable medical equipment. The position will also require the work of power tools and various machinery.

GS-07 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Individual Occupation Requirement/Specialized Experience:
IORs: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
Specialized Experience:
For this position includes but is not limited to...the Knowledge of various prosthetic and/or orthotic components to select and properly fabricate, adjust, and repair custom prosthetic and orthotic devices. Skill in the installation of rivets, fasteners, buckles, grommets, laces and other repairs or items required during an orthotic fitting process.; Knowledge of joint alignment procedures, preparing negative cast models for modification, formation of metal componentry and bench fabrication of AFOs and KAFOs following an orthometry form. Knowledge of patient anatomy and specialized terminology associated with the work of prosthetics and orthotics. The incumbent must understand the steps, procedures, terminology, and policies associated with prosthetics and orthotics to apply the knowledge required. Must be knowledgeable about the mechanical function of prosthetic and orthotic devices; Knowledge of computer software programs used for creating documents, logging and tracking assigned fabrication orders, time and leave entries, learning activities, and general access to information on the internet. Must be able to apply this knowledge to computer software programs including but not limited to: VATAS, TMS, VA DALC and ROES, FLOW, and CPRS.
Preferred Certification: the incumbent will maintain certification and/or licensure as an Orthotic and/or Prosthetic Technician or other qualifying credential from the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics Inc. (ABC) or the Board of Certification in Prosthetics and Orthotics (BOC) or State or National Agency/Organization with equivalent standards.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
