There are two (2) positions located in the Veterans Transportation Services within Ambulance Service at Oklahoma City Healthcare System - Oklahoma City VA Medical Center in Oklahoma City, OK. The Lead Paramedic performs technical duties as a Paramedic (Basic and Advanced Life Support Services) and leads three or more Paramedics, GS-0640-09, and a cadre of Emergency Medical Technicians, GS-0647 as a regular and recurring part of their assignment.
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Identifying, distributing, and balancing the workload and tasks among the line Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) in accordance with established workflow and/or skill level
Reviewing the work of EMTs and Paramedics to ensure that the supervisor's instructions, work priorities, methods, deadlines and quality have been met
Training, or arranging for the training, of the EMT and Paramedic team members and using the methods and techniques of team building to accomplish tasks or projects
Reporting on daily job performance, progress, and training needs to the supervisor and providing information, as requested, concerning promotions, reassignment, and recognition of outstanding job performance to the supervisor
Assisting in maintaining program and administrative reference materials, project files, and relevant background documents
Preparing reports and maintaining records of work accomplishments and administrative information as required
Providing oversight and coordination of process improvement initiatives, assuring teamwork, and addressing customer service issues in the Ambulance Service
Performing all the duties and responsibilities of a Paramedic
Responding to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses, sometimes encountering situations which may be life threatening
Determining and prioritizing appropriate medical treatment/procedures and need for additional assistance
Making an independent preliminary assessment of the patient's condition and selects from a variety of prescribed protocols the one that is considered appropriate under the given circumstances
Administering basic and advanced life support care at emergency scenes in accordance with established medical standards
Following safety procedures, utilizing safety equipment, and monitoring work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals
Operating or utilizing various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools and supplies
Providing treatment as prescribed in the protocol and may make modifications to the protocol, if necessary, within prescribed limits set by the Emergency Department provider
Performing the procedures, as required, and in strict compliance with standing orders and protocols within the national scope of practice and written standards
Selecting the most efficient route to and from sites, taking into consideration traffic patterns, health facility locations, etc. Operates the emergency transport vehicle and using telephone and radio communications equipment and systems
Adhering to traffic ordinances and regulations pertaining to operation of emergency vehicles
Providing a thorough safety inspection and operator maintenance (e.g., monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure, etc.)
Taking patients to and from medical areas by coordinating, with the patient and unit, the time of departure and assisting in lifting and carrying patients into or out of transport vehicles and into treatment facility
Performing other related duties as assigned
Work Schedule: 40 hours a week; Work schedule will be determined based on the need of unit.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirement: The following are minimum requirements for appointment as a Lead Paramedic in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), which all applicants must met.
Specialized Experience (GS-10): You must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (i.e., GS-09). Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled (i.e., performing duties as a Paramedic which includes but not limited to: performing patient examination, providing patient care, and ensuring appropriate patient handling by utilizing the knowledge of the majority of body systems, physiological and topographic anatomy, and diagnostic signs; determining and delivering emergency care for persons injured to sustain the patient's life by utilizing the knowledge of emergency protocols/treatments and emergency medicine techniques; and operating and utilizing various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools, and supplies to provide emergency and patient transportation. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENT: The following certifications and licenses are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position (Lead Paramedic). Applicants who do not meet this requirement are ineligible for further consideration.
Possess and maintain current Basic Life Support Provider certification
Possess and maintain certification as a National Registered Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic)
Possess and maintain current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification
Possess a valid and unrestricted state driver's license

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The Lead Paramedic's work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients in a variety of situations. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients, frequently under adverse conditions or in confined areas. Incumbent may be required to spend prolonged periods in protective breathing apparatus and protective clothing during chemical, nuclear, biological, or hazardous materials incidents/exercises.
