Serves as research analyst in the Office of Retirement Policy (ORP); responsible for planning and carrying out assigned research studies concerning the effects of social security and related social insurance, and income maintenance programs on income distribution, resources allocation, and long-run economic growth. Conducts social and behavioral psychology, and judgment and decision-making research and analysis and assists in the management of projects and studies.

Duties

Performs quantitative and qualitative analysis of policy issues using appropriate research methodology and presents information and findings in analytical papers or provides input into reports and papers. Apply professional knowledge of behavioral psychological principles, theories, methods, or data to Social Security and retirement-related research. Plans and develops design and layouts for publications, and prepares information for electronic media productions and release with the assistance of specialists. Prepares position papers and reports for higher-level officials.

To qualify for Social Science Research Analyst positions, applicants must possess one of the following: A degree in behavioral or social science or related disciplines appropriate to the position. NOTE: Transcripts are required to substantiate education; OR A combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. NOTE: Transcripts are required to substantiate education; OR Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED TO SUBSTANTIATE POSSESSION OF QUALIFYING EDUCATION. All academic degrees and coursework must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions. To qualify for the GS-11, applicants must also possess one of the following: A Masters or equivalent graduate degree in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. NOTE: Transcripts are required to substantiate education; OR 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS-9 level, or equivalent, which is in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such experience must include at least two of the following: researching how cognitive psychology concepts such as cognitive biases, cognitive heuristics, risk perception, reasoning, information processing or psycholinguistics can explain decision-making about employment, finances, health, or retirement; researching how social psychology concepts such as social influence, compliance, persuasion, social judgement, or group dynamics can explain decision-making about employment, finances, health, or retirement; researching how individuals process information or how to improve publications or other communication products to improve understanding or usability; producing written research products for academic or general audiences. In addition to the requirements listed above, applicants must qualify for the posted grade level(s).To qualify for the GS-12, applicants must also possess one of the following: A PH.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a behavioral or social science. NOTE: Transcripts are required to substantiate education; OR 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS-11 level, or equivalent, which is in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such experience must include at least three of the following: researching how cognitive psychology concepts such as cognitive biases, cognitive heuristics, risk perception, reasoning, information processing or psycholinguistics can explain decision-making about employment, finances, health, or retirement; researching how social psychology concepts such as social influence, compliance, persuasion, social judgement, or group dynamics can explain decision-making about employment, finances, health, or retirement; researching how individuals process information or how to improve publications or other communication products to improve understanding or usability; producing written research products for academic or general audiences.

Providing Proof of Education or Substituting Education
