These positions are located in the Rocky Mountain Network and the Greater Yellowstone Networks, in the Inventory and Monitoring Division.
The purpose of these positions is to collect long-term monitoring data for natural resources at network parks.

Duties
The major duties of the Biological Science Technician position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Collects long-term natural resource monitoring data (plant, water, stream biology, soil, and geomorphology) using established network monitoring protocols, standardized data collection procedures, and equipment. Installs, operates, and maintains sampling equipment to collect monitoring data.
Accurately and efficiently identifies vegetation to the species level in the field using knowledge of botany and plant family characteristics and tools such as taxonomic keys and standard floras.
Records monitoring data on paper forms and in established databases on field tablets and GPSs. Follows quality assurance procedures to ensure that data is entered accurately and completely, and so that all measurements are collected at each site.
Conducts fieldwork safely in remote backcountry settings under harsh conditions, including high elevation (> 12,000 ft), hot/cold temperatures, and biting insects. Accesses monitoring sites using 4-wheel drive and off-trail hiking. Relocates monitoring sites using topographic maps, compasses, GPS units, and aerial photographs to navigate.
Works closely with other crew members to complete daily tasks, manage safety, and assess risks. Provides clear, appropriate, and effective verbal and written communications with co-workers, supervisor, and other points of contact at the parks.
Utilizes a variety of computer programs to enter data, conduct quality control and assurance of data, complete data summaries and reports.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/01/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience must include all of the following: Performing a variety of measured data collection activities in support of field resource management projects; Assist in conducting biological surveys related to plant species; Collecting biological data on plant species. You must include hours per week worked. -OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. The successful completion of a full course of study of at least 12 months in a school for clinical laboratory technicians may be substituted for the 1 year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level for positions involving microbiology and biochemistry technician work. Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include your resume with hours worked per week annotated, as well as transcripts.
To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience must include all of the following: Collecting and organizing field data related to plants; Taking and recording scientific measurements; Utilizing various techniques to gather biological samples; Using monitoring protocols, field forms, and shared databases.
You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
