The Oncology/Infusion Nurse in the Oncology Center is a Registered Nurse (RN) which is ahighly skilled professional who works closely with other nursing and medical staff to ensure that all patients in the Chemotherapy/InfusionSuite receive optimal care. The RN provides care based on American Nursing Association (ANA) and Oncology Nursing Society (ONS} standards to individuals, families and groups.

Duties

This nurse is responsible for administering, monitoring, documenting and evaluating the patient's response to immunotherapy and/or antineoplastic therapies and any other therapeutic treatments or interventions specifically provided within the Chemotherapy/Infusion Suite. This nurse collaborates with the chemotherapy patients being seen in the Infusion Suite. The Oncology/Infusion Center is clinically and administratively responsible lo the Nurse Manager of the Hematology/Oncology Specialty Clinic and may function as the charge nurse within the clinic. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. !t also requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring of patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and maybe required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, must be able to multi-task and have to ability to shift priorities based on patient needs. The Oncology/Infusion RN is responsible and accountable for the management of population groups within the Oncology Center or clinical area assigned for optimizing patient care, patient safety and operational efficiency. He/she possesses the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting to facilitate the effective care of patients. Within the framework of the nursing process and through highly developed clinical expertise, the Nurse ll is able to diagnose, monitor and treat patient responses to life-threatening health problems. He/she is responsible for collaboration with administrative and clinical staff in actively managing and planning for actual and potential needs of patient population groups. Through his/her well-developed clinical experience he/she is able to anticipate and implement preventive patient care measures. This RN is responsible for direct patient care within Nursing and Patient Care Services and facilitating the appropriate plan of care. This RN is expected to manage patient care in an astute manner, which promotes positive patient outcomes and adherence to Nursing Practice Guidelines. He/she possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs, providing care as considered necessary. He/she provides guidance to all caregivers and collaborates with Providers regarding the plan of care and educational requirements as indicated to support patient needs. He/she reports status of service needs and contributes to problem resolution and modification of processes as necessary. This RN is also responsible and accountable for maintaining training required and may be assigned additional duties that reflect the educational, experiential and competency requirements. The RN is accountable for maintaining required training, attending/completing all mandatory review programs, and takes responsibility for attending in-service and continuing education activities with continuous progression in knowledge and skills in Chemotherapy/Infusion and Hematology/Oncology practice. He/she will maintain ONS Biotherapy Certification and competency requirements outlined in the Dimensions of Nursing Practice: Assesses, monitors, and treats patient's response to antineoplastic and/or immunotherapy treatments and hematology/oncology related health problems. Able to function effectively in an emergency situation and/or during an infusion/ transfusion reaction. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: 1 to 2 years oncology experience Oncology Certificate preferred but not required Chemo/Immuno Therapy preferred Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: The full performance level of this vacancy is VN-03. Registered Nurses: Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicles.
