Duties

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY Assist in researching and analyzing identified procedural and/or legal issues, and prepare written summaries applying relevant cases, statutes, regulations, court rules, policies, procedures, and other relevant legal authorities. Prepare drafts or legal documents (or assigned portions thereof) such as pleadings, memoranda of law, discovery responses, subpoena, requests, complaints, answers, motions, witness and exhibit lists, objection stipulations, settlement agreements, certificates of service and legal correspondence. Track cases through a legal database or other agency data management programs, prepare reports and analyses of case load data and respond to inquiries regarding case assignments and case status. Perform research using computer research tools, such as LEXIS, Westlaw, PACER, and the internet. Assist attorneys with factual development of cases. Investigate facts by communicating with client agencies, contractors, U.S. Attorneys and their staff, and others to gather background information and to obtain relevant factual materials. Serve as a technical authority, performing work that is characterized by a depth and variety of legal and non-legal research, problem solving analysis, interpretation and evaluation associated with the resolution of complicated factual and legal matters. Performing other administrative functions as needed to support the legal pratice of the office. Duties are listed at the Full Performance Level (GS-12)

Qualifications

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Minimum Qualifications For GS-11: You must have one-year specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service performing at least two (2) of the following: Organizing evidentiary materials and maintaining large litigation files. Utilizing bound and computerized legal research tools. Assisting attorneys with preparing legal documents. OR Have a Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree, or successfully completed at least 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field that is directly related to the duties of this position, OR, received an LL.M. OR Have a combination of graduate education and experience, as described above that meets 100% of the requirements. For GS-12: You must have one-year specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service performing at least two (2) of the following: Analyzing and evaluating legal decisions and case files to identify relevant issues and potential evidence. Conducting legal research concerning precedents and past court decisions. Composing legal briefs, summaries of analyses, decisions, and prehearing documents. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through national Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to gain employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.
