The pharmacy technician works under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist to ensure the prompt and accurate delivery of medications to patients in accordance with appropriate state and federal pharmacy laws, policies, and procedures of the pharmacy department.

Duties

This position will function as a rotational activity within the pharmacy department. The areas of rotation will include, but not limited to, controlled substances, bulk compounding, prescription processing, outpatient dispensing, automated prescription processing and call center. Major Duties include: l. Demonstrates a complete understanding and adhere to all policies and procedures of the department of pharmacy 2. Adheres to and participates in the quality improvement program of the department 3. Demonstrates a complete understanding of drug inventory system with daily accepting, reviewing, and signing McKesson's invoice for new shipment of medications prior to properly restocking these merchandises. Notifies the procurement technicians of any items that are not matched with the invoice or missing from the invoice 4. Assist the pharmacists in dispensing prescriptions to the veterans in a timely fashion, with accuracy and efficiency 5. Consistently demonstrates an ability to keep up with patient workload 6. Demonstrates a good judgment, decision making skills and customer service 7. Demonstrates a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with coworkers 8. Ensures that the production of non-sterile compound product is in accordance with departmental policies and procedure and in compliance with USP 795 regulations 9. Demonstrates a complete understanding of the state and federal laws governing the handling and dispensing of controlled substances. Adheres to the controlled substance policies of the department 10. Participates in the pharmacy call center and promotes positive customer service with internal and external customers. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Preferred Experience: One to three years' of retail pharmacy experience PTCB Board Certification Basic computer skills to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) Knowledge of Opti machine Grade Determinations: GS-6 Experience - Must have one year of experience equivalent to the next lower level, that fully meets the KSA's at that level. Creditable Experience - To be creditable, experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice. Reference: GS-5 Assignment - This is the full-performance level for pharmacy technicians. Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and require minimal supervision. Reference: GS-5 KSA's - (a) Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment. (b) Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique. (c) Knowledge of basic inventory procedures. (d) Knowledge of pharmacy information systems. GS-6 KSA's - You must meet the following Knowledge, Skills, and or Abilities. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. Knowledge of, and ability to follow written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. References: VA Handbook 5005 Part II, Pharmacy Technician Qualification Standard, Appendix G28, Dated 3/17/2006. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-6. Physical Requirements: The Position will require light lifting (under 15 pounds), light carrying (under 15 pounds), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (2 hours), standing (2 hours), and repeated bending (1 hour).

Education

Education above high school may not be counted towards qualification for this position at the GS-6 level. High school education may only be counted towards meeting the basic requirements for this position.
