Duties

Serves as a supervisor responsible for planning, scheduling and directing the work of the mechanical maintenance crew. Work directed is associated with maintenance, replacement, and repair of mechanical equipment under the purview of the Central California Area Office (CCAO). CCAO is assigned the primary operation and maintenance responsibility for facilities comprising the American River and East Side Divisions, and Auburn Folsom South Unit of the Central Velley Project. Major features include Folsom Dam and Powerplant, Nimbus Dam and Powerplant, and New Melones Dam and Powerplant. The powerplants have a total combined nameplate capacity of 512 megawatts. Other reserved projected works include Folsom Pumping Plant, Folsom South Canal, and wide array of land, buildings, maintenance structures and appurtenant features. Establishes deadlines, priorities and work sequences to meet overall work objectives, plans, and schedules. Determines crew size and crew leaders and determines requirements for tools, equipment, and related materials and supplies for work projects. Coordinates maintenance schedules and system outages with other maintenance managers and staff to perform mechanical and related maintenance, repairs or replacements and assure broad integration of activities within the Area Office. Coordinates repair and callout efforts when problems occur on power generation units or water delivery equipment, including troubleshooting problem causes. Ensures safe shutdown of the unit or equipment and coordinates issuing of clearances, Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) etc. Assists in coordinating the mechanical portion of clearance and confined space permit procedures for the safe shutdown, entry into, and start-up of all main plant equipment. Coordinates with Technical Services and other engineering staff in performing routine or special diagnostic and condition assessment tests. Determines correct methods, procedures, and allowable tolerances in repairing and rebuilding mechanical components and features. Assures compliance with agency policies and regulations, the negotiated labor agreement, and all other applicable laws and regulations. Coordinates drafting of mechanical drawings with the Technical Services staff and ensures accurate as-built drawings are prepared and maintained. Checks drawings for correctness and makes recommendations to improve accuracy. Assists in the review and updating of SOP's. Ensures the safety of all personnel, as well as contract or other personnel undertaking mechanical maintenance activities. Promotes continual safety awareness and conducts weekly safety and daily crew meetings for work status and safety. Coordinates and ensures proper inspections and tests are completed on critical safety equipment such as ladders, ropes, slings, tools, respirators, etc. Maintains log of accidents and incidents and enters required information into the proper reporting systems. Coordinates with the Safety and Occupational Health Specialist in documenting incidents and performing or participating in incident investigations and report development.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time-In-Grade: Current career or career-conditional employees of the Federal government, or former career or career-conditional employees, who have a break in service of less than one year, are required to meet the time-in-grade restriction of one year of Federal experience at the next lower-grade, with few exceptions outlined in 5 CFR 300.603(b). Applicants eligible under the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) are not required to meet time-in-grade restrictions in order to be considered. You must meet all Eligibility and Qualification requirements, including time-in-grade restrictions and any selective placement factors if applicable, by 11/01/2023.
