This position is located in the Radiology Department, Special Procedures - CT - section, of the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. Diagnostic Rad Techs (DRT's) employed at this level are fully functional as a DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. They may have varying assignments including specialized and complex radiographic procedures.

Duties

Operates a Spiral Computed Tomography Scanner. Develops new techniques, defines optimal protocols, and devises alternative ways to visualize pathology within the patients. Interacts with physicians and physicists, on a recurring basis in the performance of daily assignments. Confers with radiologist to determine requirement and type of exams to be completed. Prepares room, equipment, contrast media and supplies as necessary for each procedure. Provides explanation of procedures and assumes care for physical/psychological needs of the patient while in radiology. Determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness of scans, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of CT scanning. Schedule and received patients to include verbal interview for demographic accuracy and patient education prior to procedure, ensuring patient's comfort and relaxation. Positions patient within the CT systems, monitors patient during all phases of appropriate examination(s) and removes patient from the respected system(s) upon completion of the data and/or imaging acquisition(s). Administers contrast media and medications under the direction and supervision of the staff radiologist(s). Prepares contrast material that are used in CT/angiography and other exams. Performs technical and general operation and maintenance of the computer, disk drives, console, imaging devices, etc. Assists and develops training programs for new technologist(s), physician(s), resident(s), and general clinical staff in the imaging sections. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT). *MUST INCLUDE COPY OF ACTIVE CERTIFICATION IN APPLICATION PACKET Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] Physical Requirements: Outlined below in detail. Grandfathering Provision: May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Preferred Experience: 5 years experience; CT Scan certification from ARRT Grade Determinations: To qualify for the GS-09 grade level, you must have at least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8-full performance level), directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Examples of experience would include independently providing services in specialized areas of radiologic technology and/or general radiologic technology services with only occasional oversight or direction for highly complex issues; checking system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines; having knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments; updating patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results; monitoring patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed; using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers; having knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest. In addition, you must demonstrate, in your resume, all of the following technical Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): *Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is at the GS-9 grade level. Physical Requirements: Heavy carrying (45lbs and over), straight pulling, pushing (above 4 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking and standing (8 hours), kneeling and repeated bending (2 hours), both legs required, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, both eyes required.
