Position is located in the Radiology Department located within Radiology Service at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center. Employees at the full performance serve as staff DRTs. Performs computerized tomography studies of the head, neck, spine, chest, body and extremities. These exams are performed with and without the use of various contrast materials. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies to bring about proper diagnosis and treatment.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: The technologist confers with radiologists to determine requirement and type of exams to complete. Determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness of scans, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of CT scanning. Schedules patients for examinations, advises radiologists or referring physicians of relevant clinical history and notifies them of scans requiring their immediate attention. Coordinates daily schedules and consults with other medical center physicians, clinical, administrative, and clerical personnel of next day and future day's availability for patient examinations. Schedule and receives patients to include verbal interview for demographic accuracy and patient education prior to procedure, ensuring patient's comfort and relaxation. The technologist obtains all relevant clinical information from the patient for all diagnostic CT scans. They position the patient within the CT Systems, monitors patient during all phases of appropriate examination(s) and removes patient from the respected system(s) upon completion of the data and/or imaging acquisition(s). Confers with the radiologist(s) to establish requirements with reference to contrast agents, vital signs, medications, and physiological monitoring to perform the procedure(s). Establishes and monitors quality control programs for these sections and maintains operations logs, service and maintenance reports. Maintains imaging files on patients, clinical analysis, computer data integrity, and technical parameters of each examination to include Picture Archival and Communication System (PACS). Computed Tomography Section: Performs, with guidance, Spiral Computed Tomography (CT) Axial and/or 3-D Reconstruction Scans to include drainages and biopsies. Performs other duties common to the Radiology Service as assigned by the Radiology Manager/supervisor. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Physical Requirements. Refer to VA Directive and Handbook 5019 in addition to physical requirements outlined below. Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and certification that are part of the basic requirements of the DRT occupation. (Only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-6 Diagnostic Radiologic Technician Experience or Education. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or the successful completion of one full academic year of graduate education leading to a degree in radiography or other directly related field to diagnostic radiology/imaging. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate, in their resume, all of the following KSAs., Knowledge of basic technique standards for minimum radiographic exposure. Knowledge of anatomy and positioning. Knowledge of all patient safety procedures. Knowledge of radiographic producing equipment. Ability to learn basic computer functions Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist GS-7 Experience or Education. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level; or the successful completion of one full academic year of graduate education leading to a degree in radiography or other directly related field to diagnostic radiology/imaging; or successful completion of an advanced registry program, with certification, in addition to a 4-year baccalaureate degree program in radiography or other directly related field to diagnostic radiology/imaging. Education may relate to the duties of a specific position or to the occupation but must be appropriate for the position being filled. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs. Knowledge of the technical adequacy of the digital image, including the ability to adjust the image quality in the digital system. Knowledge of different contrast material required for the requested study. Knowledge of radiation protection standards, minimum radiographic exposure techniques, appropriate beam limitation to anatomical area, and employing lead shielding when performing standard radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures. Knowledge of computed radiography, CR readers and Digital Imaging systems. Knowledge of PACS and basic computer skills. Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist GS-8 Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs. Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines. Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed. Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results. Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed. Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest. Preferred Experience: CT Scan certification from ARRT, 1 year of experience in CT. References: VA Handbook 5005/119, Part II, Appendix G25. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-8. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-6 to GS-8. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability. Must have the ability to stand and work while wearing a lead apron for possibly long periods of time.
