About the Position: Incumbent will serve as a recognized expert in the field of occupational health related to Industrial Hygiene, responsible for planning, development and execution of the Defense Health Agency's (DHA) agency-wide activities for hazard management related to Industrial Hygiene (IH) functional areas within the Safety and Occupational Health (SOH) Office. This position is located in Falls Church, VA and is not a remote position.

Duties

Maintain DHA IH program in the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System (DOEHRS-IH) and assist Agency SOH Managers in developing and implementing federally mandated processes. Develop health policy, objectives, and programs which have national and international impact, and evaluate Agency wide occupational health program implementation. Investigate major exposures. Analyze mishap data to identify trends, causal factors and recommend requirements/development of agency standards for the elimination and control of a wide range of exposures related to high-risk hospital health hazards. Provide expert guidance on standards and criteria and ensure that appropriate consideration is given to safety and occupational health matters in the plans and programs for the development/acquisition of facilities, equipment, and procedures. Represent the agency in inter-agency meetings involving policy matters related to hazard management and coordinate programs with other Federal agencies. Provide consultative services to Agency Safety and Occupational Health Managers and field staff employed at Market/Network locations who are dealing with complex exposures. Develop Agency policy and provide oversight for the SOH Management System, SOH Risk Management Process, Hazard Management Process, and Mishap Prevention Activities. Coordinate Mishap Investigation Boards (MIBs) for Class A investigations and oversee Class B MIB process. Assist the SOH Manager in planning, coordinating, and evaluating a comprehensive safety program for DHA.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technicology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) performing industrial hygiene investigations/surveys; 2) collecting environmental samples using a variety of sampling equipment and analytical techniques; and 3) identifying risk conditions for operation of various types of safety and industrial hygiene instrumentation or equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
