About the Position: This Deckhand (Ship Keeper) Leader position is with the New York District, Operations Division, Physical Support Branch located in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey. Duties

Work with and serve as leader of 3 to 4 deckhands and/or deckhand trainees. Perform various marine and shipboard tasks. Assure deckhands wear proper safety equipment to accomplish job. Assign work and instruct workers based on job requirements indicated by supervisor. Check work in progress and upon completion for conformance with instructions and safety requirements. Correct deficiencies or brings problems to attention of Supervisor. Train new employees as to how work is to be performed.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A one-year probationary period is required.
  • This position meets the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing.
  • Must be able to take and pass a pre-employment physical and annually thereafter for duration of time in this position.
  • Mission Essential: Subject to recall 24 hours a day, 7 days a week due to emergency situations.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 pounds in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.

To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Required Selective Placement Factors: The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess: 1) a valid Merchant Marine Credential for Able-Bodied Seaman; and 2) a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). (Note: You must attach a copy of your credentials to your application package and include the serial number and date issued on your resume.) Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) and Ability to Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle)Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation)Ability To Lead or SuperviseOperation of Motor VehiclesReliability and Dependability as a DeckhandWork Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Physical Effort: Moderately heavy physical effort is required in lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds; work in stretched and cramped positions. Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes of heat and cold and heavy rainfall. There is a danger of slipping from a vessel into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning. On-shore work may involve working in mud, snow, or ice in dirty or cramped situations.
