Duties
Operate pumps, foam generators, boom and ground sweep nozzles and other similar equipment.
Drive/operate major motorized firefighting equipment.
Inspect hydrants, hoses, and sprinklers to ensure they are working properly.
Inspect buildings to alert tenants of hazards and noncompliance.
Position vehicles considering factors such as wind direction, sources of water and other hazards.
Perform firefighting duties and serve as a crew member protecting life and property.
Respond to medical emergencies, motor vehicle collisions, and industrial/construction accidents.
Identify symptoms of potential life threatening dangers and provide appropriate treatment and immobilization.
Verify and calculate proper dosages of medication.
Determine the best transportation route to medical centers.
Establish effective communication with receiving facilities to provide them with patient information.
Operate alarm room equipment including radio, computers, and fire reporting facilities.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- The position requires the employee to obtain and maintain a valid U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operators License in order to operate fire department vehicles within 90 days of employment.
- Employee must have and maintain State of California or National Registry Paramedic license along with CPR Certification.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
- This position requires a 72 hour work schedule which includes days, nights, weekends, holidays and a 24 hour working schedule.
- This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- Employee must have or obtain within 24 months of employment the additional certifications listed below in Qualifications and Required Documents sections.

GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in controlling or extinguishing fires; operating fire department equipment; providing basic life support or assisting intermediate life support or paramedic staff with assessing patient's conditions to administer basic treatment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
GS-08 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in controlling or extinguishing fires; operating fire department equipment; performing fire prevention inspections; assisting with rescue operations, providing basic life support or assisting intermediate life support or paramedic staff with assessing patient's conditions to administer basic treatment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

GS-09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in controlling or extinguishing fires; operating fire department vehicles and equipment and assisting with the effective positioning of emergency vehicles; performing basic fire inspection in reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; assisting with rescue operations; controlling hazardous material incidents; providing basic life support assessing patient's conditions to administer basic treatment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Certifications:
GS-07 Certifications: Required to have State of California or National Registry Paramedic license along with CPR Certification. Required to obtain certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) certification Firefighter I, Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS), and Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) within 12 months.
GS-08 Certifications: Required to have State of California or National Registry Paramedic license along with CPR Certification AND ACLS, BTLS or PHTLS, and PALS. Required to obtain DoD, IFSAC, or Pro Board Firefighter I within 12 months.
GS-09 Certifications: Required to have State of California or National Registry Paramedic license along with CPR Certification AND ACLS, BTLS or PHTLS, and PALS. Applicants must have the following DoD, IFSAC, or Pro Board Firefighter I & II, Airport, HAZMAT Awareness/Operations, Driver/Operator Pumper/ARFF/Mobile Water Supply.
