Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing substantive legal support to the District of Utah. Typical work assignments will include: Performs a variety of duties requiring the application of legal evaluations of litigation support service needs, ranging from litigation processes, legal terminology, local court rules and court procedures. Provides technical assistance to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in a developmental capacity to facilitate the management of incoming and outgoing document discovery in accordance with e-Discovery and other procedural requirements. Performs basic legal research; gathers and analyzes data and evaluates its usefulness in resolving legal issues. Utilizes automated resources and technology for the development, presentation, and litigation of federal cases, including legal research tools. Utilizes a variety of Automated Litigation Support (ALS) software applications (CaseView and NetDocs) to locate, organize, analyze, characterizes and present information that is pertinent to the government's position in the case. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

Qualifications

GS-07: To be eligible at the GS-07 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education OR a combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as: performing routine litigation support assignments such as assisting with organizing case information; preparing discovery productions, including scanning and coding documents and creating DVDs; assisting attorneys in preparing for court such as preparing exhibits; and preparing a variety of legal documents; assisting in the use of technology to organize digital evidence; and editing a variety of legal documents; such as information request, pleadings, correspondence and memos. OR Education: One full year of graduate education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law) OR Superior Academic Achievement: Possess a Bachelor's Degree or expect to complete the requirements for a Bachelor's degree within the next 9 months AND possess at least one of the following criteria: (1) Class standing- in the upper third of the graduating class in the college or university. (2) Grade-point average (G.P.A.) - have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum. (3) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society - Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies recognized by the Association College of Honor Societies. OR Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. GS-09: To be eligible at the GS-09 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education OR a combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as: Assisting attorney's with trial preparation, including making recommendations on how to proceed with trial presentations; utilizing office automation tools in order to create physical and digital trial presentations; working with investigators, agents, and legal support staff; handling a wide variety of evidence and discovery; and providing technical assistance to litigation teams. OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field (e.g., Legal Studies, Criminal Justice, Law); or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D., if related. My education was obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. OR Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. To qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. If your agency has notified you in writing that you are a displaced employee eligible for ICTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your ICTAP eligibility; 2) you apply under the instructions in the announcement; and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy.
