This position is located in the Laboratory Department at the Fort Yuma Service Unit, Winterhaven, CA. The purpose of this position is to augment the regular laboratory work force by allocating some of the routine duties of the medical laboratory technologist/technician to this position such as the collection of blood. This position reports to the Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientist.

Duties

Provides a variety of clinical laboratory services by performing standardized tests and examinations. Performs automated and manual procedures as requested by providers for use in clinical diagnosis, patient screening, monitoring patient therapy and status. Collects and processes specimens for analysis on site or refers specimens to appropriate referral laboratories for analysis. Ensure that samples drawn is in the proper tube, labeled correctly and properly identified. Uses proper technique for appropriate sample collection and uses proper customer service skills.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-6: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Performing a variety of standardized tests and examinations under normal technical supervision; following written procedures which provide detailed instructions on each step of the assigned test and examinations including the techniques, procedures, stains, reagents, chemicals, temperatures, measurements, controls to use and observe, machine settings, etc.; performing phlebotomy services; determining correct blood specimen for tests ordered; and adhering to quality control procedures. GS-7: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Properly collect blood specimens using a variety of collection procedures, techniques, and aids utilizing age specific competencies for routine patients as well as uncooperative patients, medical or physiological complications, and technical problems. Identify and obtain equipment and supplies properly, and knowledge of medical terminology sufficient to communicate and interact with the entire health care team as well as patients and their families and skills sufficient to take a variety of samples such as sputum or urine samples, and explaining the patient's role in the procedure to the patient. Ability to perform limited clerical duties including filing and the ability to perform computer functions to order tests, process tests, patient scheduling, retrieves data of many various types, and to report any problems encountered to the proper personnel; OR Substituted education for experience: Completed one full year of graduate education. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. Education must include courses directly related to the work of position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. OR Combination of education and specialized experience: Combination of education and specialized experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-7 grade level. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
