Duties

Plans, administers, coordinates, and evaluates the Radiation Safety Program and ensures regulatory compliance and personnel safety in this complex specialty. Administers and assures compliance with the provisions of the DHA NRC license authorization. Serves as consultant on technical and health physics procedures, techniques, training, and regulations for the BAMC Health Physics Service. Evaluates, researches, and resolves existing or potential problems relative to health physics and radiation safety efforts. Provides review and comments on reports resulting from evaluations conducted by other external organizations. Participates in committees, panels, working groups, etc., and as subject matter expert and technical advisor with regard to health physics, nuclear, and radiation safety matters. Provides technical classroom instruction and radiation safety training to personnel under BAMC command and, upon request, is prepared to support training for coordinating commands/agencies that have an MOU/MOAs with BAMC. Prepares plans to meet substantial changes in workload; justifies revisions in staffing levels, work priorities, and deadlines. Carries out safety and internal controls program responsibilities.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
• Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
• This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
• A pre-placement medical examination is required.
• Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
• Up to 5% business travel may be required.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirements for Health Physicist: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. Licensure: Certified Health Physicist through the American Board of Health Physics OR Certified as a Diplomat, American Board of Radiology in any modality. OR Combination of Education and Experience: Courses, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or other education. OR Certification: Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing specialty safety programs, educating staff on safety guidelines, reviewing reports and overseeing other personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
