The Oklahoma City VA Health Care System, Pharmacy Service, is currently recruiting for a Pharmacy Technician - Specialty Technician in Oklahoma City, OK.

Duties

This is a PTCB certified position and functions in various areas of pharmacy service including direct patient care areas, outpatient pharmacy, inpatient pharmacy, and other as directed. Given the complexity of pharmacy operations, the incumbent will be assigned a primary and/or secondary area of focus based on the needs of the department. Assigned areas of focus may include but are not limited to Procurement, Automation, Controlled substance, State Veterans Center, Mission/Choice, Time Keeping, Admixture, or other as directed by the supervisor. For example, a Specialty Pharmacy Technician may be given the role of Automation Technician, IV Room Admixture Technician, Controlled Substance Technician, Procurement technician and trained to serve in this capacity. Other assignments may include multiple tasks such as Controlled Substance/State Vet Home or Procurement/Automation/Controlled Substance pending the needs of the service and the scope of the work. All of these areas fall within the professional practice of a Specialty Pharmacy Technician once qualified by management. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Controlled Substances (CS): Position has operational responsibility for inventory of drug products and pharmaceutical supplies related to controlled substances. Inventory will be preformed twice a week at least 3 days apart. Other inventory or reports for the CSC will be maintained and provided. Inspections and inventory verification will be completed timely. Issue briefs or other reports will be prepared for response or communication to facility, VISN, or other accreditation body as directed by the supervisor. Documentation of all CS dispensing activities will be tracked in pharmacy automation and VISTA for accounting purposes. Any errors in inventory documentation will be researched to determine if a clerical error or diversion occurred. Diversions or other issues regarding amounts in excess of five dosage forms will be reported to the Chief of Pharmacy, VA Police, and Facility Director. Automation: Position requires detailed comprehension of pharmacy automation equipment. This includes the ability to operate and maintain ADEs or central pharmacy storage devices and ancillary equipment. Knowledge of CS distribution from vault to patient is required. Ensure the automation formulary is current and accurate. Add new medications/products to automation as needed. Removes products no longer purchased or used with changes in medical therapy guidelines. Ensure automation of workflows is maximized for safety. Maintains security and provides limited access for individual users. This position will have the responsibility for entering and deleting access for individual users. They will develop and implement best practice utilization of the automation. This will be coordinated with supervisors to enhance the use of automation. Maintain electronic records and archives data as required. Purges obsolete data to ensure system preforming optimally. Ensures accurate inventory in ADEs. Participates in biennial inventory or wall to wall inventory as requested. Facilitates other inventory requirements as requested by VISN or Facility leadership. Procurement: Understands Material Management function of pharmaceutical drug products and supplies. This includes knowledge of hospital procurement acquisition policy, regulations, and procedures as contained in VA Handbooks, DSCSA, or like documents. Maintains accountability of daily purchases, receipts, and delivery. Understands storage requirements for pharmacy medications and supplies and manages storage areas to meet all VA and Federal requirements (OSHA, TJC, Directives, CFR. Works with pharmacy physical space to organize and maintain shelving. Information in electronic applications (or paper documentation packets) will be managed for data collection, storage, and retrieval. Medication Distribution: Facilitates pharmacy workload by independent functioning to accomplish the distribution activities of the pharmacy. Provides distribution service to ADM for CS including outdate checks, maintaining par levels, and returns to pharmacy. Ensures all documentation for refills to ADMs are returned to pharmacy. Assists in total quality improvement activities by participating in medical center and service process assessment and action teams and continually seeks to improve services. Performs all the duties of all GS-6 and lower graded technicians, if required. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (6:00a - 2:30p, 7:00a - 3:30p, 8:00a - 4:30p) Tours of duty include rotating shifts and weekend coverage as deemed necessary based on the needs of the service. Qualifications

Basic Requirements Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy Technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with Chapter 2, Section D, Paragraph 5a. Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. Grade Determinations. GS-7 Experience. One year experience at the next lower level and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities *1. Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities. 2. Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes. 3. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff. 4. Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. 5. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process. 6. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures. 7. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. 8. Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems. Preferred Experience: Omnicell automation experience References: VA HANDBOOK 5005/15 PART II APPENDIX G28 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS07, which is above the full performance level. Physical Requirements: The position also requires climbing stairs, lifting to 50 pounds, dexterity of the hand and wrist, and arm strength to perform dispensing of medication orders. The position requires walking, standing, and sitting for long periods of time.
