The employee serves as a Motor Vehicle Operator/Laborer and is organizationally aligned under the Engineering Service line at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center located in Iron Mountain, Michigan.
Duties
Duties include but may not be limited to:
Operates passenger vehicles, tractors, trucks (GVW 22,000 pounds), power equipment, snow removal equipment (GVW 17,000 pounds), and all other related equipment.
Transports patients, both ambulatory and in a wheelchair.
Operates passenger buses and follows scheduled routes or special runs from one location to another.
Operates, maintains and repairs facility grounds equipment such as lawn mowers, push or tractor type, snow blowers and other related equipment.
Operates plows, tractors and/or skid steer equipment with hydraulic attachments, salts and sands sidewalks, and moves snowbanks back with the frontend loader.
Maintains responsibility for the overall appearance of the grounds which includes raking, cutting grass, trimming hedges, edging sidewalks and other seasonal gardening tasks.
Measures and mixes sprays and dusts, specific amounts of fungicides, insecticides and herbicides by following instructions on the product label and on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/19/2023.
Your background must demonstrate knowledge and experience in the normal and emergency operation of the wheel chair lift to be able to safely load and unload patients and disabled visitors or equipment. Driving, starting, stopping, backing and parking very large vehicles with heavy loads in all types of traffic and road conditions and weather conditions. Knowledge of the height, width, length, and weight of the vehicles in order to judge overhead and side clearances, the turning radius, braking distance, and the safest distance to be maintained from other vehicles. Knowledge of Federal, State and local safety rules and regulations for operating vehicles. Skill in defensive driving techniques. Recognizing developing hazardous road and traffic conditions, and the judgment to adjust driving methods to the practices of surrounding traffic, and to select alternate routes to avoid potential problems. Reading and understanding road maps and other locator documents. Knowledge to recognize developing maintenance problems and performing minor preventive maintenance when conducting operator inspections and reporting any problems. Knowledge of safe braking distances for motor coaches, considering the weight and size of the bus and the added weight of the passengers. Ability to deal with difficult patients, visitors and employees.
**NOTE: The incumbent must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License. This license must be valid for: 1. Passenger Transportation 2. Air Brakes

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: Must have muscular and visual coordination, rapid reflexes, depth and field of vision must be within normal limits. Good hearing, corrected with an aid, is also required to enable incumbent to perform a satisfactory job. Moderate to heavy physical capacity may be required when operating the buses/trucks using in transporting the patients/cargo due to the size, wind resistance, turning radius, braking distance, and other factors not readily visible while driving lighter and smaller type vehicles. Assists in the loading/unloading of materials and/or other cargo being transported (lifts cargo weighing 0-50 pounds without assistance; over 50 pounds with assistance).
Working Conditions: Work is performed outdoors in all kinds of weather. Emergency repair work may expose the operator to all types of climatic conditions, as well as to the hazards of traffic. Driving will mainly be on well maintained roadways; however, roadway conditions may be severely deteriorated due to construction work or weather conditions. Some off the road driving may be required.
