This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Duties

The Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for providing pharmaceutical care to patients in an inpatient care setting as assigned within the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System (VALLHCS). The inpatient pharmacy supervisor functions at the highest level of clinical pharmacy practice to provide pharmaceutical care to patients and optimizes patient care outcomes, working independently under their scope of practice as defined by the medical center to directly care for patients. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Maintains, monitors, and corrects problems of workflow within assignment areas. Performs patient care activities to include planning and implementation of Clinical Practice Guidelines of drug therapy pertinent to the specialized pharmacy service line, monitoring and follow-up of therapy through appropriate laboratory tests, diagnostic tests and other supportive care modalities. Obtains Clinical Privileges or Scope of Practice as required for practice as a provider, as directed by the Chief of Pharmacy Service, and as approved through the Chief of Staff, and the Medical Center Director. Develops policies and procedures leading to the safe and cost-effective use of medications in the specialized pharmacy program. Documents in the medical record, recommendations, concerns, and potential medication related issues to communicate these concerns to other health care providers. Employs current VA, The TJC, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other research accrediting bodies or authorities to meet standards and/or regulations set forth by these organizations regarding drug distribution, compounding of sterile products, security and inventory management system and procedures in a Health Care Services Pharmacy setting. Provides drug information, observations on patient response to therapy, and appropriate recommendations regarding treatment alternatives or additional interventions to maximize patient outcomes taking into consideration choice of therapy, safety, efficacy, formulary, and pharmocoeconomics. Assists in assuring that the pharmacy program is compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body requirements, i.e., TJC, FDA, ASHP, etc. Ensures assigned administrative projects and reports are submitted in a timely fashion. Independently prepares reports regarding the Pharmacy programs and provides data to the Associate Chief or Chief, Pharmacy Service. Performs other related duties as assigned. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Citizenship: Citizen of the United States Education: Applicants must possess one of the following: Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. Verification of approved degree programs may be obtained from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, 20 North Clark Street, Suite 2500, Chicago, Illinois 60602-5109; phone: (312) 664-3575, or through their Web site at: http://www.acpe-accredit.org/. (NOTE: Prior to 2005 ACPE accredited both baccalaureate and Doctor of Pharmacy terminal degree program. Today the sole degree is Doctor of Pharmacy.) Graduates of foreign pharmacy degree programs meet the educational requirement if the graduate is able to provide proof of achieving the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission (FPGEC) Certification, which includes passing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT). Licensure: Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. The pharmacist must maintain current registration if this is a requirement for maintaining full, current, and unrestricted licensure. A pharmacist who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, applicants must possess the following grade requirements. GS-13 Pharmacy Supervisor: Applicants must have 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. In addition, applicants must meet the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions. Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards pertaining to pharmacy. Skill in managing people or programs Assignment: Responsible for the professional and administrative management of an assigned area in pharmacy service, to include budgetary execution. Such individuals have responsibilities for supervising multiple pharmacists and technicians. Manages people, maintains effective interdepartmental relations, and cooperates with other services to accomplish the medical facility's mission and goals. Develops performance standards, assures that the program area is compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body requirements, designs and implements orientation and training programs for staff, and develops and maintains systems to monitor the performance of staff activities. Develops policies and procedures relative to their assigned area. References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G15 - Licensed Pharmacist Qualification Standards. Physical Requirements: Pre-employment physical will be conducted in accordance with VA Handbook 5019. Principle duties require repetitive use of hands and fingers (for example, preparing IV admixtures, use of a computer keyboard, etc.). This may require lifting and carrying light loads, including boxes, equipment, unit-dose cassettes, and IV solutions; stooping or kneeling (for example, to pick up items from the floor, remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers, etc.); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time. Normal ranges of hearing and vision are required to perform work and communicate effectively; must have the visual ability to distinguish between basic colors and shades of color. An ability to perform tasks requiring rapid mental and muscular coordination functions simultaneously is necessary. Must be physically capable of operating various types of equipment used for the job.
