There are two positions located in the Electronic Section of the Engineering Service at VA Hudson Valley Healthcare System - Castle Point VA Medical Center (1) in Wappingers Falls, NY and Franklin Delano Roosevelt Hospital (1) in Montrose, NY. The Electronics Technician is responsible for converting theoretical ideas of engineers into practical approaches for the modification or development of units or electronic devices in support of complex electronic systems.
Duties

The Electronics Technician is responsible for the working condition of computer and computer support equipment for the medical center, which includes all phases of maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, relocation, operation, and testing of min computers, microcomputers, personal computers, video display terminals, word processing stations and systems, peripheral computer equipment (printers, disk drives, modems, etc.), cable connections, data transmission lines, and computer to peripheral interfaces to support the electronic systems at the campuses such as the card access system, camera system, overhead paging system, nurse call system, HVAC/R system and checkpoint system. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Assisting in the acquisition of new computer and communication equipment
Performing tests on computer equipment using diagnostic software, identifying and rectifying improper environmental conditions for computer equipment, designing, constructing and/or testing any specialized electronic equipment
Assisting Electronic Engineering Section staff in the repair and maintenance of computer based medical equipment
Serving as an electronic technician responsible for the maintenance and installation of non-medical and limited medical equipment and systems throughout the facility and the CBOCs
Inspecting and evaluating new systems upon receipt to determine that all government safety regulations, manufactures specifications and contract requirements are met
Resolving design and installation problems with contract and other personnel and writing technical reports on projects, special Investigations or studies
Serving a contracting officer representative for various contracts affecting the section
Developing and designing modification to equipment to Improve efficiency
Assisting in the development of preventative maintenance procedures and determining the frequency of inspection
Responsible for calibration and performance of entire complex inter connected PC systems and subsystems
Initiating, maintaining and reviewing inventories in order to produce a list of needed parts and to insure a constant supply of commonly used parts Is available
Providing supervisor with the proper purchasing information from manufactures listing of parts or other sources and the information regarding the quality of vendor contracted services
Advising the supervisor as to the placement and utility requirements of new equipment to ensure proper installation
Reviewing technical publications provided by organizations that develop technical standard, to keep abreast of changes in standards, codes and hazard reports
Ensuring industry and VA accepted repair practices are utilized
Performing other related duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 08:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m.

Qualifications
The following are minimum requirements for appointment as an Electronics Technician in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), which all applicants must met.
Specialized Experience (GS-11): You must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (i.e., GS-10). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: (a) Work as a technician, instructor, inspector, or mechanic (civilian or military) that showed progression in theoretical and practical knowledge of electronic theory, and of the characteristics, function, operation, and capabilities of a variety of types of electronic equipment. This experience must have included the use of schematic diagrams, a variety of test equipment, and the application of appropriate electronic formulas involved in such duties as testing, troubleshooting, modifying, designing, calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, constructing, developing, and instructing on electronic equipment, or similar functions; OR (b) Experience in developing policies, standards, and procedures for maintenance, installation, or similar functions, provided the work clearly shows that the applicant applied a specialized knowledge of the theories and principles of a variety of electronic systems or equipment. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The work includes recurring lifting of light to moderately heavy items weighing less than 50 pounds. The incumbent works with electricity and runs the risk of shock.
