You will serve as a PLASTIC FABRICATOR LEADER (EXPERT) in the COATINGS and COVERINGS SHOP, Code 970, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD. The incumbent of this position will serve as an Expert Plastic Fabricator leading a group to ensure work assignments are completed.

Duties

You will conduct random surveillance inspections of in-process preservation work that is accomplished by shop personnel. You will perform inspections of deficient coatings and work in process to ensure the Supervisor's direction is followed, proper standards and practices are being adhered to, and rework is minimized. You will determine the methods, techniques, materials, and devices best suited to obtain smooth-textured and decorative surfaces. You will perform Ultra High Pressure Water Jetting (UHPWJ) on the exterior of ships and submarines above and below ground level from various heights up to 100 feet. You will prepare and direct subordinate crews of up to 30 employees to apply, manufacture and repair coating materials.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals).
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position requires the ability to climb vertical ladders when working aboard ships and submarines, and occasional work work from ladders, platforms and staging areas.
  • This position may be subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position requires rotating shift work.
  • This position requires work in confined spaces.
  • This position requires the ability to lift and carry items weighing 45 pounds.
