You will serve as a CRANE OPERATOR in the RIGGING AND OPERATIONS DIVISION, LIFTING AND HANDLING DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Duties
You will comprehend crane capacity charts and understanding computer Load Movement Indicator.
You will operate cranes at all boom lengths, angles, and positions during continual location changes.
You will be operating Bridge Cranes, Westmont Portal Cranes, Craft SCR and Point Control Portal Cranes, Samsung Portal Cranes, AM Clyde Portal Cranes, AT / RT Mobile Cranes, Dual Engine Truck Cranes and Floating Cranes to support shipyard projects.
You will closely observe operating techniques, safety factors, and comprehend the characteristics of weight lifting equipment.
You will work in areas outside the line of vision and accurately operate with direction from hand signals or high power radios.
Requirements

- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This may be a bargaining unit position.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
- This position requires exposure to high noise levels.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.

* Utilizing complex multi-point suspension techniques to maneuver over, under, and around obstacles by tilting, dipping, and turning the suspended load.
* Recognizing, and eliminating or controlling safety hazards arising during item movements.
* Operating various types of cranes supporting heavy lifting operations for long periods of time.
* Making proper gear selection, attaching weight-handling gear to support the movements of items by crane or other mobile material handling equipment.
* Providing hand or radio communications to crane operators for the safe and effective movement of items to and from submarines, shops and other areas to include positioning of items in exacting locations onboard ships.
* Providing assistance to the crane operator in performing the pre-use check of the crane, safe rigging of the load, and providing hand or radio communications to crane operators for the safe and effective movement of items to and from ships, shops and other areas.
