You will serve as a CRANE OPERATOR in the RIGGING AND EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS DIVISION, LIFTING AND HANDLING DEPARTMENT at the PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will operate boom cranes at various outdoor locations where maneuverability is restricted and accuracy is critical. You will operate bridge cranes to lift, transport and position materials in confined shop areas, where maneuverability is restricted and accuracy critical to maneuver around ground level obstacles. You will maintain crane equipment, clean, and lubricate working parts of crane. You will attach hooks, magnets, clamshell buckets, and other special material handling devices as required.

Requirements

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION while performing the following duties: 1) Operating fixed-position or traveling cranes equipped with booms, pillar, portal and tower cranes; or equipped with bridges or jib members, overhead bridge, gantry and semi gantry cranes of all capacities; 2) Operating cranes to lift and move heavy equipment and machinery, ship structures and components, castings, forging, plates, beams, lumber, crated or packaged materials, etc. 3) Making precise load placements where exact movements must be made to position the load accurately and safely. 4) Monitoring the load and the boom and compensating for variations in the crane's lifting capacity while changing positions. 5) Performing visual and operational checks of equipment on a continuing basis and immediately reporting defects.
