Duties
The Health Technician is assigned to Acute Hospital Services Service Line and is responsible for patient related activities in this area which includes medication record management, scheduling of all patients to various clinics, appointments and/or tests, information activities, routing control and other related services for patients.
Major Duties include but, not limited to:
Collaborates with the Clinical staff in the administration and coordination of ward activities.
Provides nursing care to patients including bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, care with elimination of body wastes; as well as maintain a clean, comfortable, and cheerful environment.
Uses and cares for equipment such as various types of examination tables, stretchers, scales, wheelchairs.
Assembles the necessary equipment and assists with care, such as oxygen therapy.
Accomplishment of duties with the culture of teamwork, cooperation, and identifying with the purposes of the team.
Accomplishment of the medical center's mission/patient care/ patient satisfaction with the paramount focus of the team.
Works in partnership to resolve on-the-job team problems; developing, implementing, and evaluating improvements to work process.
Responsible for electronic medical records, to include technical tasks associated with the maintenance and custody of medical records on the unit.
Provides intensive personal care to patients requiring close monitoring of vital signs and continued observation during critical stages of illness and/or treatment.
Work Schedule: Rotating Shifts, Nights and Weekends

Physical Requirements: Position requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, lifting, and transferring during the administration of care. In addition, the work could require long periods of standing, walking, lifting of moderately heavy objects such as typewriters, printers, manuals, or medical records. In addition, the incumbent must be emotionally stable and adjust to different types of personalities, demonstrating cheerfulness, compassion, courtesy, and concern. Must be quick and dependable in taking emergency action as directed and use initiative in preventing accidents.

GS-05 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR): An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for entry into this job series, and it is something that can't be waived. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
To qualify for the Health Technician GS-0640 Series, applicants MUST possess one of the following:
Specialized Experience.Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. OR,
Education. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position (transcript required). AND,
In addition to the above IOR, applicant must meet the following experience/education:
Specialized Experience.You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience providing courteous and respectful personal care to patients requiring close monitoring of vital signs; timely and accurately interpreting doctor orders to input into a computer database; experience working in partnership with the team to resolve problems in a healthcare setting; using a variety of medical equipment such as examination tables, stretchers, scales, and wheelchairs. OR,
Education. Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with a major of study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the work of the position (transcript required) OR,
Combination. Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience. (transcript required).
To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
