About the Position: Serves as the professional wildlife biologist for the Fish and Wildlife and Hunt Control Programs at Fort Knox, KY, a 109,000 acre reservation which includes 28 lakes, 8 intensively managed, and 55 miles of streams.
Duties
Apply wildlife management techniques to properly manage a diverse ecosystem.
Correspond with a variety of personnel and organizations on matters relating to endangered species, wetlands, hunting and fishing related issues and must be knowledgeable of relative laws and regulations.
Collect data and samples for analysis and conduct statistical analysis and evaluation of data and prepares reports.
Review projects for environmental impact and make suggestions to reduce or mitigate negative effects to endangered species and wetlands resources.
Develop planning and fertilizing prescriptions for various plantings of native grasses, trees annual and perennial crops that will improve wildlife habitat.
Operate one or more types of field tractors with attached or towed equipment.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license, and any installation, DOD and/or Federal license or certification required for vehicle operated.
- May be required to wear and/or use protective clothing and equipment in accordance with established health and safety regulations.
- This position requires a pre-placement medical and annual medical surveillance exam in accordance with Occupational Health requirements.
- May be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include overtime, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain the Department of Defense (DOD) Pest Management Certification which is required for the application of pesticides within the first 12 months in position.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

Basic Requirement for Wildlife Biologist:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological science that included at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; AND at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); AND at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes insert examples of specialized experience which includes insert examples of specialized experience performing work related to managing and conserving wildlife resources by planning all aspects of the program and providing technical expertise and advise to other involved in similar work or affected by the effort of this position; the development, production, conservation and utilization of the natural resources of forests and associated lands; inventory, planning, evaluation, and management of resources such as timber, soil, land, water, wildlife and fish habitat, minerals, forage and outdoor recreation; and the evaluation, management and protection of natural resources.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Biological Sciences.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
**DOD Pesticide Applicator Certification is required.**

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
