THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION THAT REQUIRES MILITARY MEMBERSHIP. This National Guard position is for a SHEETMETAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT), Position Description Number PDD0477000 and is part of the Mississippi National Guard.

Duties

As a SHEETMETAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT), WG-3806-10, you will perform sheet metal maintenance on aircraft and components. This position is located in a Transportation Aircraft Repair Shop (TARS) which supports 10 to 15 States with backup unit maintenance, intermediate support maintenance and limited depot maintenance. The purpose of this position is to perform sheetmetal maintenance on aircraft and components. (1) Inspects aircraft and determines nature and extent of repairs to be made using applicable TMs as guidelines. Works directly on the aircraft and its components accomplishing such tasks as removal, fabrication, repair, modification and installation of parts and assemblies, such as frames, stringers, longerons, bulkheads, beams ribs, spars, skin, cowling, brackets, fairing, access door, panels and other related items. Repairs cracks in aircraft skin, fabricates and fits patches to damaged areas determining repair detail necessary to retain or restore original strength. Fits and trims components to aircraft such as loading gear doors, ailerons, flaps, engine access doors and other assemblies. (2) Troubleshoots aircraft structural repair situations in such areas as fuselage, tail, wings, cowlings and stabilizers. Removes, forms, fits and installs highly stressed and double contoured skins, using hand or powered drilling and cutting tools and other metal working equipment. Determines shear and bearing load factors during rivet replacement. Installs and heads up regular, heat-treated, high shear, and blind type aircraft rivets and fasteners, using pneumatic riveters, special tools, and bucking bars. (3) Aligns component structures and airframe using precision optical measuring instruments, plumline and level. Inspects for corrosion conditions, eliminates corrosion by chemical, mechanical and parts replacement methods. Performs metal to metal bonding where delamination of surfaces and core material occurs in control surfaces; makes repairs to honeycomb structural assemblies. (4) Performs fabrication of local manufactured items required for facility support. Work includes layout, bending, cutting, forming and assembling. Devises and calculates patterns employing the principles of triangulation and radial and parallel line development. (5) Sets up and operates power shears, brakes, and rolls, dimpling machines, drill presses, saws, heat-treating furnaces, hardness testers and other metal working equipment, including use of all hand tools of the trade. Prepares and designs layout, dies, jigs, and templates necessary to carry out fabrication repair or modification of aircraft, and GSE and facility support equipment. Works from blueprint, technical manuals, diagrams, and work orders. Must maintain a thorough knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metal properties, fabrication and metal repair processes, aircraft structural specifications, mechanical drawing and shop mathematics. (6) May paint, strip and stencil aircraft and/or components. Also participates in conducting the necessary safety program for the Sheetmetal function. (7) May serve up to 20% of the time performing on-the-job training. Evaluates training effectiveness. Required to serve, as requested, on maintenance assistance and instruction teams (MAIT) and CONTACT Teams throughout the supported area. (8) May participate in aerial flights which are defined by applicable Army publications as Maintenance Test Flights. Serves as a member of the flight crew for the purposes of observing, recording, diagnosing malfunctions, or otherwiseassisting in determining the airworthiness of aircraft or the functioning of specific items/components when expertise or services are required to accomplish in-flight test requirements. (9) Performs such travel as may be required in the accomplishment of assigned duties and the organizational mission. (10) May assist authorized firefighters in the performance of fire/crash/rescue duties on an as needed basis. (11) Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

This is an indefinite position, tenure 3, with a time limit determined by the needs of the agency. Any permanent military technician who is selected for this position will become tenure 3. The selectee will receive the same benefits and entitlements as the tenure 1 employee, but will be considered tenure 3 for purposes of reduction in force. If a permanent resource becomes available, incumbent may be converted to a permanent appointment without competition. NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement. MILITARY MEMBERS WITH BONUSES: Upon acceptance of a military technician position military members who are currently receiving a military Reenlistment/Extension Bonus (REB) or GI Bill-SR Kicker may lose incentive eligibility and may be subject to termination or suspension of incentive (includes indefinite and temporary technicians on assignment for more than 180 days in any continuous 12-month period). GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with the ability to plan, manufacture, and install cylindrical, square, or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastenings such as single and double-hem edges and single, double or grooved seams. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have 18 months of experience or training in planning, layout, and construction skills to manufacture items and systems with dovetailed seams, set-in-bottom seams, burred-bottom seams, or wired or lock seams. Experience using more complicated shop tools and equipment. Experience in using metals including stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material and alloys. Experience demonstrating the use of more complicated mathematical calculations and complicated measuring instruments.
