About the Position: This position is located in the St. Paul District. A majority of work is directly related to the maintenance and repair of lock and dam operating equipment/facilities at river and reservoir locations and to floating plant equipment and propulsion systems. Other general maintenance and equipment mechanic duties to support varied missions are undertaken.
Duties
Performs SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW, (Gas Metal Arc Welding), TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas), oxyacetylene welding and brazing, and oxyacetylene cutting in repairing mechanical equipment.
Welds barge and boat hulls, broken and bent parts of equipment and machinery such as frames, hitches, braces, rudders, etc. Reinforces cutterheads, gears, clamshell buckets and teeth, dozer blades, sheaves and rollers, drag chains, etc.
Performs hard face welds on parts.
Constructs tanks, hangers, hatches, hitches, mounts, and plates by cutting and welding steel sheets and rods.
Metals worked on include stainless, manganese, mild, spring, and malleable steel, bronze, aluminum, cast iron etc.
Works on items of floating plant such as towboats, tenders, barges, loading docks, etc.
Performs general maintenance, care, and minor repair of buildings and surrounding grounds and facilities in support of the District's hired labor crew assigned work throughout the District.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position meets the criteria for random drug testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE ER 690-1-1218.
- This position requires successful completion of pre-employment and/or annual physical examinations as required. Applicants must be physically able to perform efficiently the duties of the position.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain a valid State driver's license.
- May be required to alternate working hours on all shifts to include weekdays and weekends as well as rotating shifts.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Welder without more than normal supervision. Perform the common duties of electric/acetylene welding and brazing, and acetylene cutting in repairing mechanical equipment. Metals worked on include stainless, manganese, mild, spring and malleable steel, bronze, aluminum, cast iron, etc. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: This work involved standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing - often in awkward and cramped positions. Incumbent frequently handles objects weighing from 20 to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: The work is performed on floating plants, and indoors and outdoors under all weather conditions and temperature extremes. Work area may be noisy, dirty and smoky. Welding involves exposure to fumes, heat, sparks and glare. There is the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, burns, cuts and exposure to radiation. Work is often accomplished near or above moving water and from scaffolds, ladders or platforms. There is discomfort when wearing required protective clothing suchas welding helmet, mask, apron, gloves, shield, goggles, etc.
