About the Position: This position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with the Director for Medicine Department of Medicine Dermatology, Laboratory Services, Bethesda Maryland. Duties

Responsible for the identification, accessioning, proper fixation and processing of all tissue specimens received by the laboratory. Processes and prepares special pathologic tissue for study by pathologist. Examines specimens and determines methods of preparation and staining to best demonstrate characteristics to be studied. Develops and executes new procedures related to micro techniques and assists in the establishment of new and competent methods of fixation of pathologic and normal tissue for micro analytic examination. Operates, maintains, troubleshoots and adjusts or repairs cryostats, which are used to prepare frozen section for the rapid diagnosis of cancer. Performs cryotome and must maintain a skill level sufficient to cut frozen section slides if the pathologist or resident needs assistance. Work requires thorough knowledge and experience in tissue orientation and embedding in paraffin wax and proper microtomy techniques of all tissue types, including bone. Performs a full range of duties involved in special processing and staining of all tissue types including skin, bone, nerve, brain and lymph nodes.

Requirements

• This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call "basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
• This position requires incumbent to be able to lift 50 lbs.
• This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
• This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes embedding, cutting and staining paraffin embedded tissue; and operating tissue processors and automated stainers. Although not required, management prefers applicants with experience in the orientation and embedding of tiny biopsies and dermatology specimens, such as shave biopsies. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
