About the Position: This position supports the Department of Pathology, Anatomical Pathology at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.
Position is 1st shift; duty hours will be 0700-1530 or 0800-1630.
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Duties
Perform non-routine, advanced and complex technical work involved in preparing human biological material for specialized diagnostic analyses.
Evaluate quality of laboratory services and processes, the adequacy of equipment, personnel and working accommodations through onsite inspections, audits, and review of reports.
Evaluate new procedures, techniques and tools to ensure performance is in accordance with governing regulatory and accreditation standards.
Direct the work of three or more civilian employees engaged in performing histopathology technician duties.
Prepare work schedule for and balance the workload of employees in accordance with established workflow or job specialization.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds may be required.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes leading a team; applying histopathology concepts and methodology in areas such as tissue processing, embedding, microtomy of all types of tissues including very small biopsies, staining and microscopic tissue identification within a clinical laboratory; assisting with training and/or instruction for personnel on the basics of Histopathology (embedding, microtomy of all types of tissues including very small biopsies, and quality control preferred); and experience in the performance of special stains, immunohistochemistry, direct immunofluorescence, and in-situ hybridization techniques. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Although not required, management prefers American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification.
