The incumbent will serve as a pharmacy technician in this VHA Medical Center and is responsible for assuring facility compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, directives, policies and procedures. The incumbent must be familiar and knowledgeable with the technical and administrative aspects of all areas of pharmacy practice.
Duties
Major duties include, but may not be limited to:
Inpatient preparation and distribution of unit dose medications and ward stock items
Stock management; operation, maintenance, re-stocking and troubleshooting of automated dispensing equipment processing
Filling outpatient prescriptions for scheduled and non-scheduled federal legend drugs and medical devices, over-the-counter products and supply items
Patient and customer relations
Preparation and maintenance of various logs, records and reports
May perform other duties as directed.
Incumbent should be fully aware of all aspects of drug nomenclature including generic/chemical and brand names, dosage forms, various systems of weights and measures; characteristics of drug packaging; various uses for drugs; VA and regulatory agency requirements for drug storage; special requirements for procurement, storage, distribution and handling of various classes of drugs.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; orat least 3 months experience.
Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
Grade Determinations:
GS-6 Pharmacy Technician
(a) Required Experience. In addition to the basic requirements, one year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level, directly related to the position to be filled. This experience would include the following:
Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.
Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.
Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
AND,
(b) Certification. PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above.
(c) You must also demonstrate the GS-6 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
Assignment: Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-6.
Physical Requirements: Duties require regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 40 lbs, and bending/stooping, and is able to push deliver carts that may weigh up to 200-300 lbs.
