About the Position: This position is located at the Directorate of Emergency Services (DES) Police/Provost Marshal Office.
This position alternates duty locations between Ft Myer, VA and Ft McNair in Washington, DC. Ft Myer is the primary duty location and Ft McNair is the secondary duty location, as needed.
Duties
Evaluate 911 emergency calls to determine the problem and nature of the call.
Dispatch appropriate emergency services (police, fire, or medical) personnel.
Operate a variety of dispatch and alarm systems to determine cause of alarm and initiate the appropriate response.
Maintain daily events, emergencies, processes, and/or notifications received according to protocols.
Prepare and maintain reports using office automation software.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment DoD Telecommunicator I and II certification (or equivalent).
- Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment DoD Hazmat Awareness and Operations certification.
- Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment certification in Basic Life Support Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
- Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment certification in Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN), National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification.
- Obtain and maintain within 12 months of employment certification in Emergency Police Dispatch.
- Obtain and maintain within 12 months of employment certification in Emergency Fire Dispatch.
- Obtain and maintain within 12 months of employment certification in Emergency Medical Dispatch.
- Work requires up to 12-hour rotating shifts which includes days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- This position requires a Secret Clearance.
- Subject to call back, on-call, and mandatory overtime as the mission requires.
- This position may require the employee to wear a uniform.
- Travel Duty may be required up to 10% of the time.
- Employee is required to work (weather essential) regardless of weather conditions, Terrorist Force Protection Condition (TFPCON) or installation closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
- Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment certification in Advance Fire Services Dispatching, Advance Police Services dispatching, Non-emergency Call Handling.
- Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment certification in Domestic Violence Intervention, Suicide Intervention, 911 Liability, Hazmat Preparedness for Dispatchers, and Advance Public Safety Dispatching.
- Continuous current certification is a condition of employment.
- The employee is responsible for attaining continuing dispatch education (CDE) requirements through in-service training that is offered locally.
- The employee must maintain an overall compliance score in the performance of duties of 90percent, or better, as reviewed by the Advanced Quality Assurance (AQUA) software.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) answering emergency 911 calls; (2) dispatching appropriate equipment and personnel in emergency situations; (3) performing crisis intervention with distraught callers; and (4) retrieving information using office automation and reporting systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.
