About the Position: Serve as a Maintenance Worker for the project office to which assigned. The maintenance staff operates and maintains one or more flood control dams. *Relocation or Recruitment incentives may be offered to highly qualified candidates.*

Duties

The duties listed are performed at the full performance level: Apply a variety of standardized methods, procedures and techniques to maintain and repair equipment such as, hydraulic gates, hoists, hangers, cranes, elevators, sump pumps, water systems pumps, chlorinators and stand-by generators. Inspect circuit breakers and fuses for proper condition and size, replacing defective breakers. Replace damaged or worn wiring, outlets, switches, light fixtures, outlet and switch plates and like items. Weld similar metal components together to fabricate or repair equipment. Use gas welding, brazing or arc welding. Construct, install, repair or modifies items and structures. Repair, replace, and maintain such things as pipe, tile, union joints, faucets and drains. Make gate settings regulate outflow of water in accordance with regulatory requirements. Collect humidity, temperature and wind velocity readings from weather instruments, makes gage readings pertaining to water storage and performs related calculations. Operate a variety of vehicles and vessels, such as: sedans, light duty pickup trucks and 5-ton trucks, tractors, fork lifts, motor boats, work barges, etc.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • The incumbent is required to possess or have the ability to acquire the following licenses: a state driver's license; a Corps of Engineers boat operator's license; and a fork lift operator's license.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have the ability to work nights and/or weekends depending on the needs of the project to which the employee is assigned.
  • The incumbent is required to work in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.).
  • The incumbent may be required to have a valid CPR certificate and first responder (or equivalent) certificate.
  • The incumbent may be required to obtain a water treatment plant, Class I or II, operator's license.
  • The incumbent may be required to work in both non-permit and permit required confined space and implement proper rescue and entry techniques.
  • The incumbent may be required to be properly trained in the operation of and/or operate the following equipment: Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBAs), escape packs, atmospheric monitoring devices and fall protection equipment.
  • The incumbent is required to wear a prescribed uniform.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Worker ~ without more than normal supervision. I have experience performing common maintenance and repair tasks on mechanical equipment, utility systems, buildings, and/or other appurtenant structures and property under the normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level maintenance worker who observes tasks in progress and upon completion makes sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Use moderate physical effort to stack, load, unload, move and carry tools, equipment and materials ranging in weight from 10 pounds to 40 pounds unassisted. Occasionally lift heavier objects with assistance (e.g., using a hand truck). Required to reach, walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally work in cramped quarters, or from ladders, scaffolds or platforms. Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.) and usually in a dirty, dusty and/or greasy environment. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shocks, burns, cuts bruises, maimed fingers and scrapes. Occasionally is required to wear uncomfortable protective clothing.
