About the Position: Serve as an Industrial Hygienist for the Public Health Command - East.

Duties

Recognize industrial Hygiene and environmental factors and stresses associated with complex work operations, and to ascertain their effects on the health and well-being of workers. Evaluate proposed new work processes and/or materials, and to recommend measures to minimize health hazards. Utilize industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices applicable to the performance of industrial hygiene surveys. Prepare detailed technical reports of survey findings with recommended corrective actions.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Required to take initial and annual drug test.
  • Must obtain and maintain a secret security clearance
  • Travel TDY may be up to 50% of the time.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must have an initial and annual physical. Must have pre-employment and annual respirator fitting.
  • Must be update and maintain with vaccinations.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting complex and sensitive industrial hygiene and environmental health evaluations of facilities and installations throughout the US and overseas; anticipating and assessing methods to control occupational and environmental health hazards; briefing commanders, staff members, supervisors, workers, and the general public on survey requirements and findings; preparing detailed technical reports of survey findings with recommended corrective actions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Individual Occupational Requirements Basic Requirements The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Oral CommunicationProblem SolvingSafety Hazard Analysis Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
