This position works under the general direction of the Transportation Officer. The position plans the work, establishes project deadlines on a day-to-day and/or project-by-project basis, prescribes methods, procedures, priorities, time requirements; assigns specific tasks or projects of relatively short duration, and oversees day-to-day direction, spot-checks subordinate MVOs work in progress and on completion and provides assistance when problems occur.
Duties
Duties Include:
Ensures that safety and fire regulations and standards are met and any discrepancies are reported to the Transportation Officer.
Reviews and spot-checks receipts and shipments for discrepancies. Any discrepancies noted are referred to the appropriate purchasing personnel for corrective action.
Processes all paperwork via automated methods whenever possible.
Responsible for computerized receipt of and delivery of supplies and equipment throughout the system, including inspection upon initial receipt and processing of any needed discrepancies.
Participate in the loading, unloading, and application of basic, well-established safe patient handling and loading procedures, methods and techniques. Obtains proper receipt signature for commodity delivered. Returns completed documents to the supervisor daily.
Ensures that clear and concise written procedures for patient transport and supply delivery procedures are developed and are in place.
Takes security precautions in the receipt, handling, and delivery of narcotics, controlled substances, alcohol and precious metals in accordance with current regulations.
Responsible for checks and maintenance of all types of vehicles.
Plan, supervise, check, and coordinate the careful unpacking of technical equipment and proper storage to insure its safe keeping, availability, rotation, cleanliness and neatness, and the absence of fire and safety hazards, and coordinate the distribution of supplies and equipment to the using services.
Responsible for Veterans transportation program and the delivery of supplies and equipment throughout SLVHCS.
Plans, arranges and controls all activities pertinent to fleet and transportation functions to include truck dispatching, logistics, receiving, shipping, storing, and distribution.
Ensure constant patient transport, distribution of supplies and equipment to all areas of Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare System.
Provides supervision for 17 non-supervisory Motor Vehicle Operators on a regular basis.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Driver's License Requirement: Must possess a valid state-issued Commercial Driver's License with passenger and air brake endorsement. (Please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. You will be required to show your valid driver's license at the time of your interview.)

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Effort: Light physical effort in reaching, bending turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate vehicles. Moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tired and make limited emergency repairs such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing a fuse on open highways. Must be able to assist patients into and out of the vehicle which involves the physical exertion and frequent stooping, bending and lifting of patients. Must be able to load and assist wheelchair patients often with no assistance.
Working Conditions: Employee works mostly inside, but at times will be exposed to dirt, fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises and broken bones a s a result of accidents with driving or falling objects when loading or unloading a vehicle. Vehicles are operated in all types of traffic and weather on public roads, and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. May transport chemical, bodily fluids and other contaminates with may require the use of a spill kit to isolate during emergencies.
