There are five (5) positions located in the Transportation Support Section within Logistics Management Service at Southeast Louisiana VA Healthcare System (SLVHCS) - New Orleans VA Medical Center in New Orleans, LA. The Motor Vehicle Operator will provide transportation to veterans and their caregivers who live in rural of SLVHCS and surrounding satellite clinics catchment areas.
Duties
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Major duties and responsibilities included but not limited to:
Transporting of passengers and cargo in light truck, minivans, ambulances and automobiles
Performing operation maintenance (e.g., monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connection, etc.,) and cleaning vehicles as needed
Providing non-emergent, safe transportation of eligible veterans and cargo
Operating and providing preventive maintenance for patient transport vehicles
Making the first impression as the first contact with the veterans
Interacting in a courteous and respectful manner with a wide variety of people each day and assisting disabled individuals boarding and un-boarding the vehicle
Providing the VTS program office a list of veterans who arrived at the SLVHCS via the VTS transportation van every day
Insuring only eligible veterans and their caregivers are transported to the Medical Center or satellite clinic and returned to their respective pick-up locations
Maintaining annual medical certification
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 08:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Considerable physical efforts may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways. Patient transport vehicle driver must be able to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping, bending, and lifting of patients. Driver must also be able to load and assist wheelchair patients, often with no assistance.

For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
