As the Structural Dynamics Lead Technician, you will direct employee assignments based on priorities and management direction, communicate assignments to team members, provide management with updates on progress or issues, provide status updates on activities and new assignments, and interact with customers. As Facility Coordinator for Landing and Impact Dynamics Research (LandIR), you are responsible for the maintenance and operation of the facility and keeping personnel certifications updated.
Duties
Serves as a lead engineering technician, delegating work to team members based on their skills, while providing expert guidance, mentorship, spot checks, and advice to them, serving as both a role model and advocate for the team.
Monitors the safety of the facility and its staff by ensuring that all activities adhere to NASA, OSHA, or industry standards, monitoring safety training for employees, reviewing all test plans, and controlling the access to the facility.
Serves as the ultimate authority on the safe operation, utilization schedule, and maintenance of the NASA Langley Landing and Impact Dynamics Research (LandIR) facility including all its equipment.
Effectively communicates both orally and in writing with team members, branch leadership, researchers, center operations staff, and outside customers about the status, maintenance, safety, and general needs of the facility and its staff.
Ensures the successful, safe, and timely completion of experiments through effective deployment of the facility staff while balancing the facility’s regular maintenance and inspection schedule, the weather, and the demands of outside customers.
Serves as a mentor to facility technicians, monitoring their educational needs, the status of their certifications, and providing guidance where needed.
As an expert and lifting and rigging of large test articles, plans for full-scale aircraft and spacecraft experiments, provides expert input to researchers and outside customers, ensures that best practices in lifting are followed.
Exercises demonstrated knowledge of basic fabrication techniques commonly used at LandIR including metal and/or composite fabrication, airframe modification and repair, welding, machining, and installation of instrumentation.

Qualifications
Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service:
Guiding other technicians on a project or supporting them in the completion of their daily tasks;
Supporting the execution of tests or projects related to at least one of the following: facilities, equipment, lifting and rigging of large test articles, full-scale aircraft and spacecraft experiments, metal or composite fabrication, airframe modification and repair, machining and installing instruments; AND
Communicating with various audiences (e.g. researchers, technicians, senior leaders, internal or external customers, etc.) to provide guidance, status updates, or assistance.
