The Medical Technician will report to the Supervisory Medical Technologist in the Pathology/Laboratory Department located at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. The incumbent is to serve as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant in the clinical laboratory with responsibility for performing the pre-analytic phases of laboratory testing procedures and may also perform the analytic and post analytic phases of waived testing procedures.
Duties

Completes lab requisitions with correct information and processes all specimens according to strict guidelines.
Packages and ships diagnostic specimens to reference labs following regulations. Verifies sample collection, patient identification, and sample transport requirements. Performs phlebotomy using aseptic venipuncture techniques and other specimen collection procedures.
This includes order or retrieve laboratory test requests and giving patients any pertinent information in regards to specimen collection.
Collects blood specimens under special conditions with special techniques requiring advanced expertise, e.g., blood cultures.
Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience: For positions at GS-4 and above: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-0645-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Perform a variety of standardized tests and examinations under normal technical supervision. Follows written procedures which give carefully detailed instructions on each step of the assigned test and examinations including the techniques, procedures, stains, reagents, chemicals, temperatures, measurements, controls to use and observe, machine settings, etc. Perform phlebotomy services, both fingers sticks and adult venipunctures. Determine correct blood specimen for each test ordered. Adhere to quality control procedures.

Completion of a Bachelor's degree with major study in medical or clinical laboratory or a related field such as chemistry and/or the biological sciences,
OR
Completion of a Bachelor's degree in any field that includes at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. Eligible courses may include: chemistry, hematology, blood banking, microbiology, or the biological sciences, (Must provide transcripts to qualify using this option),
OR
Possess a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Note: For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level. Then determine your education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-5. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-5. (Must provide transcripts to qualify using this option)
