The Phoenix VA Health Care System is recruiting for two (2) Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT), in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (PALMS). As a MLT you will support functions of the clinical laboratory, working independently to perform a variety of duties and complex laboratory procedures. The MLT monitors quality control systems, and measures.
Duties
The Medical Laboratory Technician will rotate within Pathology & Laboratory Service departments, performing high-complexity analytical testing procedures under the supervision of a Medical Technologist as directed within the various sections of the service. Duties of the position include but are not limited to:
Maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment in such a manner as to provide safety and efficiency in laboratory operations.
Assisting in the scheduling of employees to cover shifts in the Phlebotomy section, accordingly.
Testing of methodologies employed by the incumbent within the discipline of Chemistry includes, but is not limited to, urinalysis with microscopic colorimetric analytical testing procedures; nephelometric methodologies, fluorescent polarization immunoassay (FPIA), and microparticle enzyme immunoassay (MEIA). Performing procedure within the discipline of Microbiology including, but are not limited to, plating of pathogenic micro-organisms, performing fecal occult blood testing, working up bacterial cultures and sensitivities from blood, wounds, and body fluids.
Performing procedures within the discipline of Hematology including, but are not limited to, complete blood cell counts (CBC), coagulation studies (i.e. prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, and D-dimer).
Completing emergency testing within expected time limits, usually less than 60 minutes and notifies the appropriate provider of all critical results.
Preparing reagents, assembling equipment, and verifying correct instrument operation.
Maintaining validity of assay system by appropriate quality control testing of reagents prior to use.
Maintaining and logging all specimens received for Anatomic Pathology and ensuring that each specimen is properly preserved.
Reporting all critical values and testing according to established guidelines. Entering results into hospital computer system verifying accuracy, completeness, and validity of process.
Acting as liaison between the laboratory and the patient care areas regarding such matters as test requests, integrity of specimens received, disposition of orders for uncollected specimens; cancellation or re-ordering of work not collected, follow-up of orders for recollection or collection by ward personnel, status of requests ordering assistance, interim reports, test availability.
Sorting, processing, and distributing specimens according to established guidelines.
Receiving, verifying, and processing specimens from other VA Medical Centers, Community Based Outreach Clinics, and other outside sources.
Maintain adequate supplies for various sections of the laboratory.
Work Schedule: Vacancy 1: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. or Vacancy 2: 3:30 - Midnight. Both vacancies have rotating weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/08/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS 7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS 6. The grade may have been in any occupation but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): For this position you must meet the Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR). Do you possess (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.
You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS 6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion with considerable walking and long periods of standing. It requires frequent bending and occasional moving of heavy supplies (50 pounds or more with assistance). In some advanced analytical testing techniques, hand-eye coordination is required. The work may involve rotating shifts, such as midnight, evening, and or weekend.
